NATIONAL LIPID DAY
National Lipid Day is observed annually on May 10th. The purpose of the day is to bring awareness to Dyslipidemia. Dyslipidemia is an abnormal amount of lipids (e.g. cholesterol and/or fat) in the blood. In developed countries, most dyslipidemias are hyperlipidemias; that is, an elevation of lipids in the blood. This is often due to diet and lifestyle. Prolonged elevation of insulin levels can also lead to dyslipidemia. Likewise, increased levels of O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) may cause dyslipidemia. Dyslipidemia and is the major cause of Cardio Vascular Disease worldwide. Preventative measures including health education, emphasis on the role of physical activity, diet, and timely visits to a doctor all aid in living a healthy life.
NATIONAL SHRIMP DAY
Annually celebrated on May 10, it is National Shrimp Day. Americans eat more shrimp than any other seafood and this is the day to celebrate this delicious seafood.
The word “prawn” is used loosely to describe any large shrimp, sometimes known as “jumbo shrimp.” Some countries use the word “prawn” exclusively for all shrimp.
Preparing the shrimp for consumption usually involves the removal of the head, shell, tail and “sand vein”. There are many ways to cook shrimp. Common methods of preparation include baking, boiling, broiling, sauteing frying and grilling. Cooking time is delicate for shrimp and they are at their best when not over cooked.
A healthy food, shrimp is low in calories and high in levels of omega-3, calcium, iodine, and protein. Shrimp is also known to be considered good for the circulatory system.
Popular North America Shrimp Dishes:
Seafood Gumbo: A stew or soup that probably originated in southern Louisiana during the 18th century. Seafood gumbo typically consists of a strongly flavored stock, shrimp and crab meat (sometimes oysters), a thickener, and seasoning vegetables. Gumbo is often categorized by the type of thickener used: okra, the Choctaw spice, file powder (dried and ground sassafras leaves), or roux, the French base made of flour and fat.
Shrimp Cocktail: The Golden Gate was the first to serve this .50 cent shrimp cocktail in 1959. It is now a Las Vegas cliché. Called the “Original Shrimp Cocktail” on the menu, it is a favorite among tourists as well as the locals. The original Shrimp Cocktail consists of a regular-sized sundae glass filled with small salad shrimp and topped with a dollop of cocktail sauce.
Shrimp DeJonghe: A specialty of Chicago, it is a casserole of whole, peeled shrimp blanketed in soft, garlic, sherry-laced bread crumbs. It is served as an appetizer or a main course. It originated in the late 19th or early 20th century at the DeJonghe’s Hotel and Restaurant.
*** Shrimp Scamp is often called the “Dublin Bay Prawn” ***

Clean Up Your Room Day
Date When Celebrated: Always on May 10th
Clean Up Your Room Day is a day parents eagerly await........... and kids dread!
If you've got kids, it is very possible that their rooms are a vast wasteland, completely filled with "good stuff". "Messy" is too kind of an adjective to describe the conditions. Its impossible to walk through the room. Every dresser and shelf (and under the bed), is packed with everything imaginable. Dust has been piling up as long as your child has been around. Comfy, cozy, and quite livable to the child, its an everyday source of frustration for the "folks".
To mom and dad's delight, and every child's chagrin, Clean Up Your Room Day arrives every May 10th. Get out the shovels. Call in an industrial sized dumpster. Its time for everyone to clean your rooms!
Mother's Day
Date When Celebrated : Second Sunday in May
Everybody has a mother and absolutely no one is more special than mom. Sure, dad is really important. And, grandparent's too. But moms, well they are just the greatest. Often taken for granted, they are always our strongest supporter. You can't do wrong in Mom's eyes. When you are hurt, or not feeling well....there is no one else that can help you more than Mom. I saw this clearly recently as our son was in the emergency room. Sure, dad was an important presence. But, the look in my son's eyes with his mom by his side was certain affirmation of mom's comforting ways, and importance.
So go out and celebrate Mother's Day. First and foremost, spend time with her. If you absolutely can not be there, take time for a long phone call. Flowers, cards, candy and gifts are all part of the day. But, mom wants some time with you far more than anything else.
Did you know? The first Mother's Day was May 10, 1908 in Philadelphia
Do you remember all those things Mom used to say? Some were words of wisdom. Some were educational. Some were warnings. And some of them you just didn't understand until you grew up and started using them on your own kids. We fondly call them "momisms".
You be nice to your little brother. One of these days he is going to be bigger than you are"
Close the door, were you born in a barn
Money doesn't grow on trees.....
Just wait till your father gets home.
Someday your face is going to stick like that
If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything.
If you don't eat those, you will stunt your growth.
Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident.
Don't make me come in there!
If it were a snake, it would have bitten you.
If you're too sick to go to school, you're too sick to play outside.
Say that again and I'll wash your mouth out with soap.
Put that down! You don't know where it's been!
