Journal Entry for June 14, 2007 Mood

I was reciently diagnosed with diverticulousis.  This, after a 6 year battle with IBS, constipation, and motility problems.  I had a hard time getting Drs to do much of anything.  At first, they just did a rectal exam, and said I had IBS, (constipation dominated), so they treated me with zelnorn.  This only made me very ill when I took it. I have been on zelnorm for 6 years.  It did make me go, but with major pain and cramps, to the point of having to stay in bed the entire day with a heating pad. I had to take zelnorm at least 1 time a week, to make my bowels move at all.

So, finally, I went to a different dr, and he wanted me to have a colonoscopy.  This gave me a diagnosis of severe diverticulousis,  polyps(benign), and an occlusion in my sigmoid colon, due to scarring from diverticulitis, which I never knew I had.  Although, looking back, I remember getting sick and having horrible cramps in my lower left quadrant. I always thought I was having a kidneystone because I have them alot.

Well , now I have to have an operation to have part of my colon removed, so that I may have a normal BM.  I found out that the occlusion is causing me to be constipated, since it wont pass thru the occlusion.  I have times of severe pain from bloating, swolen feet, fever, and nausea.  I have gone 11 days before without having a BM.  This was so painful.  The ONLY alternative was zelnorn, and that made me violently sick too.  But I HAD to take it.  At least I would go.

I am worried about this resection surgery to correct the occlusion.  Is there anyone who has had this done, and if so, please can you let me in on the details.

Thank you for listening to my sob story.....

thanks,

Donna

my resection surgery has been on hold for now.
I go to the GI on the 30th for a consult on having another colonoscopy, since I have had 2 bouts of diverticulitis that sent me to the ER, this year...My CT scans showed a thickening of my colon, so My GI says that I have Crohns Disease...
