Announcing our Charity Grants!
It's been an exhausting and inspirational last few days here at DailyStrength headquarters. We read through all of more than 400 submissions you sent us - touching stories of loss, incredible stories of perseverance and strength, and so much more.
Honestly, it's hard to choose - so many different stories resonated with each of us. I won't like - we had some long debates about what non-profits to support. Ultimately, we decided that instead of giving $1000 to 2 non-profits, we'd send $500 to the 4 charities that reflected the diversity of our many communities.
Here are the 4 organizations that we are going to donate to.
Sue71435
Sue is a 56 year old woman who suffers from early onset Alzheimer's, which is affecting both her and her family. A nurse for 30 years, she's seen the tragic effects of Alzheimer's and dementia, and she has spent much of her life helping people with this difficult condition. At Sue's request, we are donating $500 to the Alzheimer's Association.
Read Sue's Charity Journal and learn more about The Alzheimer's Association
Lindacma
Linda's husband Lou was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) on December 26, 2006. Just 3 weeks and a brief round of chemo later, he passed away. Linda has committed herself to doing her part to beat this disease. At her request, we are donating $500 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Read Lindacma's Charity Journal and learn more about The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
Ab223
Ab's father, a Navy veteran, developed Multiple Sclerosis in 1967 before Ab was born. He lived for 21 more years, but was a "prisoner" in his own body, confined to a wheelchair. Despite some progress, MS remains a terrible disease that affects individuals and families. At Ab's request, we are donating $500 to the Paralyzed Veterans Association.
Read Ab223's Charity Journal and learn more about the Paralyzed Veterans of America
Saige
Saige is a 44-year-old grandma to three grandchildren. Just a year ago, her daughter Kim suffered a miscarriage after 5 months of pregnancy. Having already lost a husband to cancer, Saige helped her daughter through this trying time, and fortunately, Kim is now pregnant again. As an active member of DailyStrength. Saige has seen the pain caused by birth defects. At her request (and the request of many other mothers and grandmothers on DS), we are donating $500 to the March of Dimes.
Read Saige's Charity Journal and learn more about the March Of Dimes
The checks will be sent out within a week. Thanks to all of you for your time and effort. This event was such a success that we plan to do it again soon. Already, we've heard of many DS members who have taken their own initiative and donated to these organizations on their own.
Together, we're making a difference.
Doug

Hi everyone.
Last week I asked you to help me decide where to donate two $1,000 charitable grants.
I’ve received hundreds of amazing stories of courage from our members, and I thought I’d share just a few of them with you. Perhaps they’ll inspire you to take action, or maybe they’ll just remind you to live every day to it’s fullest. Either way, you’re all heroes to me and everyone at DS.
We’ll make a decision on the grants in the next few days, and I’ll let you know where the money ends up going. If your journal entry isn’t listed below, it’s just because we ran out of space, but we’re still considering everyone for the grants.
Please take a moment to read these incredible stories and learn more about the organizations these members support.

I HAVE PRACTICALLY TRUSTED YOU WITH MY LIFE SO WHY NOT THE MONEY ALSO THINK ABOUT AUTISM I DONT KNOW IF THERE IS A GROUP BUT RVAYRES HAS MANY CHILDREN AND IN MUCH NEED OF SOME HELP A LITTLE I KNOW THE MONEY MUST GO TO FOUNDATIONS HAS ANYONE THOUGHT OF MAKING A FUND SOMEHOW TO HELP OUR MEMBERS IN NEED
DS Friends:
Let's make a difference - together!
We all know that hugs and support are important, but so is money. Money provides the research and resources to help the ill and find answers to diseases and challenges.
With that in mind, I am planning to donate some money to health-related charities, and I want you to help. I will donate two grants of $1,000 each to charities that you, my DS friends, help me select. I plan to donate the money before October 31 (a week from today).
The rules are simple:
1. Write a journal entry - text or video. Tell us about a health-related challenge that is affecting you, someone you love, or just the world in general. Please note:
a) Make sure your journal entry is visible to "everyone".
b) Tell us specifically what non-profit organization you would like to fund.
c) It must be health-related, and it must be a non-profit.
2. After you've posted your journal, send a message to "Doug" on DailyStrength (click on MY MESSAGES, then SEND A MESSAGE). Let us know that you've posted a journal entry about the Charity Grant. We'll handle the rest.
3. We'll review all of the journal entries and post links so others can see them. This is not a popularity contest...there's no voting. We're simply looking for a great place to put some money that can make a difference. We'll read all of the journal entries and comments, and we'll announce a decision around the end of this week.
Thank you in advance for sharing your story, and taking action to help make the world a better place.
Doug

I've sent you a message and reprinted that letter in my Journal... I do so hope you will thing about this... I cannot match you in your donations, but I WILL give $50.00 if you DO decide to help in this matter

I am a bit disillusioned with giving money to Cancer Research at the moment.. as I believe they have so much which they aren't putting to the right use.. What is the point of further research when so many hospitals treating cancer patients are unable to implement the best findings they already have.. xxxxxx

I knew someone with Alzheimer's Disease, it was really sad. When we visited them [the wife had the disease], she didn't know who we were, she just wasn't herself anymore. She died at age 70 I think, I'm not sure of her age but she was senior citizen younger than 80.
I also walked in the MS walk in my area on Sunday, it was 5 miles, starting at the high school and going through town and back again. Wow! What an experience!

WOW - look what we can do for one another - from little things big things grow. as a wise man once shared with our often too self-centred world :
'All that is needed this lifetime is compassion, a good heart and love...'
May i add - and DailyStrength!

to make it happen!

My father died from early onset Alzheimer's and died at the age of 63 after a 10 yr battle. I'm very happy that you donated to the Alzheimer's Association. Every summer we do the Memory Walk and raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association. I want to personally thank you for donating to them. Bless you all...Carolyn

Great job. It is people like you that makes a diff in this old world.

What a wonderful place you have created. I am happy to hear that you are making such a difference in the world. This year for Christmas I gave everyone in my family a gift from OxFam...one got a Goat, another a can of worms and so on and so on. I tried really really hard to match each one's understanding of my life experience to the gift. For example, I will eat almost anything and can be a be stubborn...so the Goat was perfect for my boss. Happy New Year.

What great choices. What a difference we can make. Best wishes for a great New Year!!

I think you chose wisely. My brother is 33 years old and a father of six. He was diagnosed with MS 3 years ago. So that is a wonderful cause. My best friend in High School died with Leukemia. I named my daughter after him, so again a good cause. I think what you are doing is a wonderful thing. I hope more people help the way you do. Have a fabulous day.
