a day in the snow Mood
Saturday, March 1, 2008

I hate the cold. hate. moved to southern california to be warm, warm, warm. it's a problem, because Scotty loves to snowboard, and of course I want the kids to learn to ski or board (which ever they'd like), so I'm going to have to do my share of trips to the snow.

When I was in high school (I grew up on the East Coast), I LOVED skiing, went all the time. My father (who used to downhill race) started me when I was Reicher's age, and by the time I was 16, I wanted to try out for Jr. Ski Patrol. But, we lived too far from the ski resorts to make the commitment. It wasn't until I got older that I became very intolerant of my hands, feet, and face  loosing all feeling while skiing. Little by little, I skied less and less. The last time I skied was in Aspen, New Years, the year 2000...pretty bad, huh?

Well, today was like an awakening of my high school love of the slopes. It was 60 beautiful degrees on the mountain, and I was SO happy to be there, i was actually warm. Now, this trip was for Reicher and Pierce, neither Scotty nor brought any gear. We walked Reicher down the bunny slope a few times to get him "warmed up" (he's only been skiing once before, and it was last year), and then we put him in ski school for an hour. While Scotty was with Rei, Pierce and I went over to the inner tubing area. Because it was a weekday, we practically had the place to ourselves. We had a great time! When Rei was done with his lesson, he and Scotty came over and joined us on the tube hill. (See MPEG in my photo section). Not only was it amazing to watch the boys playing and laughing in the snow, it reminded me of how much I used to love skiing, and if I could go and actually be warm, I'd go every weekend! (Too bad spring skiing doesn't happen in the winter, huh? Last weekend they had to close the mountain...storm, 7 inches of snow, 55 mile an hour winds, 20 degrees...see, I just can't get excited about that).

I'm actually looking forward to going back and putting on some skis! (Can't believe I'm saying that). And, stay tuned for some really funny mpegs, cause I'm going to learn how to snowboard...

Everytime we teach our kids something it's like discovering it all over again, isn't it? I never tire of that amazing feeling of their discovery!
