Journal Entry for July 15, 2008 Mood
Tuesday, July 15, 2008 | A General Update story
Yesterday the man from NHS came to visit me, he started by introducing himself and said he had come to see how my ataxia affects me so he could determine which would be best for me.

I did quite well on the keyboard with a keyguard added. But he saw my difficulties in comparison with using the iBook which I had set up to communicate with him using keystrokes trial. So he could see difficulties I had steering pointer on touchpad and trying to use regular keyboard. So there has been a slight progression in my fine motor skills but he said i was still able to type quite quick on the keyboard compared to some of his clients, though could understand how it felt much slower to me after been able to touchtype at about 250 words a minute!

He was very nice and understanding. I tried using voice as well he could understand single words some i had to repeat more than once but couldn't understand when i tried to string several words together, but i think he just wanted to get an idea of how people who didnt know me would have difficulty working out what i was saying.

He thinks me been deaf so long as well has made my speech appear to progressed much faster because naturally its going to be harder for me to control my pitch and intonation after been deaf over 20 years if you add on top of that the slurring and difficulty getting words out and breathing at same time..from the ataxia..you can imagine my speech is quite difficult for strangers to understand at first until they have 'tuned in'.

He thought the SAM communicator was going to be too small (3.5" screen) and wasnt sure about typespeak (5" screen) as i also struggle with mobile texting cos of tiny keys, He said the keyboard that came with typespeak machine was quite small, but agreed to get it on 2 week trial and bring it for me to try.

He brought the older model lightwriter with him  - the SL35's now have smaller more compact version than my old one but look same. There is the new SL40 which does text messaging but I dont know if nhs would pay for that as its £3,200!!!

He said he would go away and see what else he could find that maybe suitable but he thinks I need a proper keyboard based communication aid that has ability to pre-store sentences and abbreviation-expansion to speed up live chat (kinda same as keystrokes does on mac).

He said getting an iMac was good idea cos the keyboards are more spaced out and they get them alot for disabled children in schools that can't write. As they often prefer them over a pc with a keyguard (cos keys are closer together).

I have to wait for him to contact me now to say when he can come back with some other aids for me to try, then see what they will agree to fund.
Hopefully we can find a solution that means that face-to-face communication is not as frustrating.

Thats really good, its amazing what you can get these days.It sounds to be a very good service.
I know when my Mum came out of hospital after back surgery and having her hip replaced they were very good and she got all sorts of things. I dont think all areas are as good as each other, a relative of ours has hardly got anything.
It must have been awful in the earlier years when there wasnt anything like this.
I hope you are ok and better than the weather lol.
    hugs.xxx
