Choices and Free Will

I'm not preaching, just sharing something I read today.

"Through the thoughts of all of our addictive or dysfunctional behavior we know that we cannot make it on our own. But, we are able to stop victimizing ourselves and take the steps of recovery that result in our healing. We can do this by turning our lives over to a Higher Power than our own that is really able to care for all of our needs.

We all come to a point where we have a life or death decision to make. That is because we have all been created with the privilege of free will. Free will is the ability to choose what we want. Even when we are still in bondage to our liabilities and dysfunctions we have choices that are confronting us.

When we are in recovery and healed by the help of a power greater than our own, there is still that bait out there, trying to lure us back into our destructive habits. The freedom of choice, that free will that I just mentioned, brings with it the burden of the consequences of the choice that we ultimately end up making. These choices that are ours to make will affect our lives and the lives of those around us.

This free will that we have been given can be a true blessing, it is also a responsibility that belongs to each of us.

When we give in to our illness, we are giving control over to another power. We are in a way giving up personal responsibility for our lives. Think about it, we are allowing something to run our lives in an effort to escape and feel safe, but in a dysfunctional way. As we recognize this we can also see that we are comfortable with the thought of giving up control of our wills and our lives. We only need to change our focus and turn our will and our lives over to the care of a power greater than our own, instead of reverting to the ways of our past."
