i knew shoulder surgery would be rough...but it is definiyely a bit worse than i expected. i knew it would hurt, but i expected it to take a day or 2 for the block to wear off. nope..10-14 hours and it wears off. we were home by noon and i was reaching for the percs by 2pm. the sleeping pills were a great addition to the pain meds. even though i couldn't get comfortable, i still fell asleep. i slept for 7 hours and never moved. that was a very good thing.
i went to therapy thursday at 11:30 am ..the day after surgery. the therapist was surprised that i was dressed like a normal person. i had a baggy t-shirt on the normal way and goodness gracious i was a freak and wore a BRA!! she was amazed that i did that. come on now...not everyone wants to swinging in the breeze!
i have steri-strips on 3 incisions. no stitches and no bleeding...i did good :) i did 3 little exercises and i will be doing them 2x a day. i go back on the 23rd to get stretched a bit more. i even got permission to shower on thursday, but waited until friday. it felt nice to feel clean again. not like i've done anything though. i stare at the tv for a couple hours take some pain meds, sleep for a couple hours...then repeat. i hate sleeping so much, but it is what my body needs right now.
off to eat a banana...found out my potassium is dangerously low...must get it higher before the doc wants to give me more meds....
take care,
robin

please excuse the bad grammar etc...i'm typing this with my left pointer finger.
i'm home...thanks for the good vibes sent my way. it worked. the surgery went fine. it was just avery large bone spur, no tears. the doc cleaned it up. i had a shoulder nerve block that lasts 10-14 hours. he gave some percocet and ambien to help me sleep. my thumb and pointer are all pins and needles and the shoulder is a bit sore. i was very nausous afterwards but they gave me some good meds. i'm in a sling and planning on dozing on and off today.
enjoy my friends,
robin

Well! You get yourself well and rejoice there were no muscle tears. How happy I am that you are after the surgery. Yeah! Take care of yourself!!! Write an update as you are able. When do you start rehab?
Well...I am sitting here at the computer trying to kill time. I have to be at the hospital before 5:30 am. I figured there wasn't any sense in trying to sleep tonight. I arrived home from work at midnight and need to start getting ready by 3:45. I'll catch up on all my sleep during/after surgery I guess. That should be the best 1.5 hour nap I've had in a very long time
Robin

I'm glad that you were able to tolerate the rehab so well. It sounds like your recovery is going well. Keep on the recommended pace and don't push it. Enjoy your naps. Who knows when you will be able to rest like this again?
Eating bananas is not a bad deal...if you like bananas. I do so I often eat them. I think that I read that with some asthma meds low potassium levels were a possible side effect. Low calcium levels too. That is the justification I gave to my wife for trotting to DQ for banana splits anyway.
Rest, rehab and banana splits? Life is good.

I'm glad things are going well,

Me too! You've gone through lots and healing takes time. Don't expect too much, just take it slow. It is great that your doing rehab. Surgeons seem to be one of two ways...either they believe in rehab or they don't. The physical therapists all like the ones that like us, but it does seem like the people who get moving sooner have the best outcomes. Enjoy pampering yourself by resting as much as you need to. Thanks for updating! :::gentle hugs:::

I'm sorry it's been so painful, and I'm glad you're able to sleep quite a bit. Those wonderful little pills make life easier to bear after surgery! Take it easy and you'll heal faster. :-)
Yes, Tom, you're right. Albuterol can lower blood potassium. In fact, it's used in some cases with the intent to lower high blood potassium. So if we're taking Advair (like I do) and then we add an inhaler and nebs during an attack, we can develop low potassium. I love your justification for a banana split! Potassium and calcium in one sweet deal! What a riot! :-) Take care.

then add in high blood pressure meds and our potassium drops quick! too bad i can't eat icecream cuz a banana split sounds yummy right now!

Yeah, it does. But I have to eat them slowly or I get an asthma attack.
How are you feeling? How is your shoulder doing? I hope the PT is coming along nicely.
Hugs,
Michelle
