    About Me

I am 44 years old and I was a radiology technologist. I had my first MS symptoms 16 years ago. I have two sons Marcus age 9 and Erik age 7. I am married to Maureen, better known as "Mo". We have been together for 17 years. I have worked in management and sales to some degree most of my life. I have done woodworking and specialized in making doors and doing radius work. Was a bike mechanic when I was young. Had my own company doing organic landscaping. Lived in the NC mountains most of my adult life and recently moved back to the Charlotte area to be near family.

    Interests

I love all types of music. Have played drums since I was a kid. Have been "learning" to play guitar for many years, still learning. Sang and played percussion in a band in my 20's. I raced road and mountain bikes for longer than I can remember. Enjoy backpacking, photography, going to hockey games, reading, walking on the beach, a good glass of wine while sitting next to the fire, playing with my kids, gardening, cooking, woodworking, flying kites, and last but not least, being with my wonderful wife, Mo.

    • Close Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
      Type: Progressive Relapsing MS

I have had MS for 16 years. I am married and have two young sons. I do not work. My sister has Primary Progressive MS. We both experienced our first symptoms of MS within months of each other. I also have a cousin with RRMS and another cousin with Lupus.

      Treatments

      Betaseron Somewhat Helpful
      Prednisone Working / Worked
It does knock out the problems caused by a flair. Makes my blood pressure go through the roof. Have to be monitored closely.
      Provigil Somewhat Helpful
Made me too jittery, couldn't sleep
      Solumedrol Working / Worked
Works great to knock out those problems brought on by a flair. Also causes my BP to spike dangerously high, have to be monitored closely.
    • Close Panic Attacks

First panic attack was at a restaurant 12 years ago. Went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. Had more attacks over the next several years and eventually could not drive a car or go to church due to the attacks. I have not had a major attack in 8 years. It still keeps me from doing things that I really want to do.

      Treatments

      Paxil Working / Worked
Worked well and eventually I weaned myself off meds.
    • Open Diverticulitis

My first flair up was 12 years ago. Thought I was passing a kidney stone the pain was so intense. Just had another bout this week.

      Treatments

      Levaquin Working / Worked
      Flagyl Working / Worked
Eating Healthier Foods Working / Worked
    • Open Financial Challenges

I have stopped working due to MS. We have many bills including my college loans. My wife does not make enough to cover our monthly expenses. SSA still will not grant me disability.

      Treatments

      Budgeting Working / Worked
Holding a Garage Sale Working / Worked
    • Open Dizziness & Vertigo

Damn the dizziness. If I'm going to fall down, at least let me have the pleasure of a good shot or two of Bourbon.

    • Open Insomnia

I have dealt with insomnia for the last 4-5 years. I am tired at bed time and fall sound asleep but after 2 hours I wake up and cannot go to sleep again for 3-4 hours. I fall asleep for maybe 1-2 hours and then it is time to get up. I average around 5 hours of sleep a night.

      Treatments

      Ambien Not Working
I sometimes wouldn't fall asleep while taking this so I felt 1000 times worse the next day. No sleep and strung out on drugs, BLAAAHH!
      Lunesta Not Working
I sometimes wouldn't fall asleep while taking this so I felt 1000 times worse the next day. No sleep and strung out on drugs, BLAAAHH!
      Music Not Working
I tend to drop off to sleep for a few minutes and then am wide awake.
      Reading Somewhat Helpful
It doesn't really help me sleep. Man, I get alot of reading done this way.
      Melatonin Somewhat Helpful
I do get to sleep but there is about a 4 hour limit and then Im awake. I notice that it becomes less affective over time so I go without for a period.
    • Open Healthy Sex

Since our first child was born, my wife no longer wants to have sex.

      Treatments

      Patience Not Working
I am afraid there will be an explosion some day and take out half the neighborhood.
    • Open Parents of Children with ADHD

My oldest son, Marcus, 9, was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 6. His Kindergarten teacher first noticed that he was having trouble concentrating in school. Marcus is very smart and a joy to be around. He suffers from impulse control, forgetfullness and concentration

    • Open Fitness Goals
Type: Be the best you can be

Before MS I was very physically active, big into sports. I was 6' 2" and 230 lbs. After MS, over a period of 10 - 12 years I dropped down to 180 lbs. My goal now is to fight this monster called MS with every bit of energy left in me. I will not give in to it! I will not retreat! My goal right now is to get back to at least 205 lbs by hitting the gym 3-4 days per week and eating healthy foods. I am already 197 lbs since starting a workout routine last summer.
