Audrey's Surgery Mood
Saturday, June 21, 2008 | A General Update story

Hi all! We are home!!!!!!!!!!!! Audrey had her surgery on Thursday, the 12th, and everything went really good! They repaired the holes in her heart, and seperated the two valves that had formed as a single valve. There is still some "mild" leaking from her Mitral Valve, but they expected that and had warned us of it. They say that as long as it stays mild, there will be no need to do anything to it, but if the leaking worsens, one day, like when she is 10, she might have to have it replaced with a mechanical valve. Whatever. She is home, happy, and VERY different.

We came home 5 days post-op, which was a shock to even the docs that she was already doing that good. She is eating well, breathing well, and playing like I have never seen. They were of course worried about some neurological damage which is a risk with any surgery, but it seems to have sparked something in that little amazing brain of hers. She is now holding her bottle on her own, putting her pacifier in her  mouth on her own, has very good hand and body control, but best of all, she seems to be in no pain.

We came home with no pain meds because she hadn't needed them in the hospital. I am to give her Tylenol if needed and I have a few times. It seems she doesn't know her limits and I find her rolled over on her belly, which may not hurt at the time, but will make her hurt later. They said that is she wants to roll over, let her. Not to hold her back, so that is what we are doing. We did have an episode the other day when she got the hiccups, and they hurt her BAD!

She saw the pediatrician yesterday and weighed 11 pounds! I know that is still so very little for a almost 5 month old, but that was just a part of her heart defect. When we left the hospital on Tues, she only weighed 10 lbs, 8 oz, so she gained a good amount of weight in a just a few days, which they are happy with. We expect her to be a little butterball here in a month or so. She has alot of catching up to do.

I am going to post some pics, and some of them do not look too good. It was very hard for me to see her the first day right after surgery, but she progressed and healed so quicky, it is amazing! Oh yeah, and that scar I was so very worried about. It looks like a cat scratch. It's not even as long as my index finger and about as wide as a piece of dental floss. It is already healing so much that most of the scabbing has fallen off and it just looks like a little line. We have to take her Tues to get her stitches out where they had her chest tubes and for a check up with the ped cards. Then, hopefully, no more appts until she sees her surgeon in 5 weeks!!!! Im so tired of doc's offices. (Sorry Dr J, but man I have been to alot of appt over the last 5 months).

Thank you God for this blessing!

I am so so so happy for you! I looked at the pictures, she is so beautiful. And about that leaking, they told my mom the same thing about me when I was around Audrey's age after my first surgery. They are still saying that I might need it someday... but I've made it 26 years so far, so don't let that worry you!

I have been thinking of you guys and been praying for you. I am so very happy to hear such a great report on Audrey!!! I know this is all so hard on you guys, and there is probably nothing harder in life than watching your child be in pain. Praise God for good doctors and His healing on her little body!!! He is the Healer, and He has a plan for her life! I know things are crazy and busy, but I hope you are holding up okay. Just know that you are being lifted up in prayer, even now when things are looking better. Sending big hugs your way!!!!
