why me?! Mood
Friday, June 13, 2008 | A General Update story
i haven't written in a while....had my surgery 5-27. my mitral valve was replaced with a brand new shiny mechanical one. some how-it had a hole in it!!!!!!!! my tricuspid valve was repaired. then i had the CABG-coronary artery bypass graft. a vein was taken from my left thigh and used to replace the circumflex artery that supplied blood to my heart. it was a VERY small blockage and if i hadn't needed the valve surgery,i wouldn not have had the CABG-at least not for a long while. but cuz of the stress on the heart,i woulda had a heart attack on the table....if any of you might have surgery like i had-stop reading now-i am NOT a happy camper!!!!! i still have pain in my chest-well gee-go figure-they sawed my sternum-chest bone open-and then spread it open.......cuz of my pale redhead skin-i am not healing " normally" i have open areas on my tghigh and chest. i am TERRIFIED of getting an infection! with me being diabetic-it could happen easier than w/ non diabetics.....i have NO appetite. rarely i will and then the food tastes like crap and then i feel nauseous. so i stop eating cuz the last thing i need is to puke!!!!!!! i have this red heart shape pillow from the hospital that i carry around in case i cough or sneeze-it helps to press it against my chest.....i just plain feel like SHIT!!!!!!!! i am on percocet and vicodin for the pain. i'm supposed to be walking, but the 1st week or so it was too humid out side. now-not too bad plus i was told i could used my t-mill. but i have ZERO energy from not eating!!!!!!! PLUS-today i go to see a nephrologist. my kidneys are messed up. for those who wanna know- my creatinine is 2.8!!!!!!!! an d my BUN is 46!!!!!!! so i am so scared that i will end up on fucking dialysis !!!!!!!!to go thru all this pain of this surgery and then need dialysis and maybe a new kidney!!!!! Cry i am just so sick of being sick! it just never seems to end-ya know?! hugs to ya alll! trish

Aww.. Hun.. I hear you. I am in a similar situation with liver damage. I was only a few months away from liver failure when I quit my meds. Now my Dr. said it appears the liver is slowly improving. I will keep you in my thoughts.
    HUGS!

I know what you are going through Trish, I feel your pain. I lived it myself, well, not the kidney issue, that's scary all by itself. But the big picture, you made it through to the other side, and will recover, completely, and be all shiny and new.

Can you hear the artificial valve ticking at all? Sometimes I sound like a metronome, and if I am in the right position I can project the sound out of my mouth. Guaranteed to break the ice at parties.

Hang in there and let the healing process happen. I know its tough, but you have already survived the tough part. Now you have to again wait, keep your life on hold a little while longer.

I probably don't have to warn you about this, but beware the mood swings. Something happens to people who go through OH surgery, and for a while, a month or longer, you may be an emotional elevator out of control. Know that that is 'normal', its not you, its a reaction to what has happened to you and your body.

I hope you keep writing, at least if it helps you to get it out.

I'll of course be praying for you! Peace

My father went through bypass surgery in 1996 and his breast plate needed to be sawed and opened in order to access the heart. After all was said and done, he was in pain for about a month. After that he was alright and able to ambulate without any problems.

He also went through CABG classes. It has only been a brief period since you came home and you will heal over time. In any case, you will be in my prayers.

WoW. Heart surgery is bad enough, but renl problems and being diabetic make it much more complicated.
You must feel really tired. Have you discussed the possibiity of havin a nasogastric tube. It will allow the nurses to feed you without you eating which is tireing.
If you do get an infection the drs can put you on intravenous antibiotics.
Was the CABG discussed with you prior to surgery?
Do you think the analgesia is adequate
    you need a good rest.
