I've been a hairdresser for many years. I have always thought of a woman's head as a blank canvas.
My joy has been to uncover someone's natural beauty and see them leave the salon with a heightened sense of self.
Of the many technical challenges a hairdresser faces with their clientele, I believe there is but one we can not master and it is a request we hear again and again.
That is to give the client the haircolor they had when they were a child. That natural sun dappled color that can not be reproduced by peroxide or artificial pigments. The color of youth and innocence.
What is the color of a child's hair when the sun hits it just right?
It's a blinding prism of joy.
Untouched, unspoiled by dissapointment or apathy.
It's a kaleidoscope of possiblities.
Sure, we can mix colors together and blend gray, add highlights, low lights, add richness and depth, but we just can't do that one thing everyone wants the most.
Make their hair look the way it did before they chose to start coloring it.
Maybe we're not supposed to.
Maybe that's a right reserved just for the young.
So for now, we'll keep coloring, perming, and styling our hair because that's what we do.
And for now, let's let the children be the ones who let the wind dry their hair and use soap to wash it in the tub and let the sun bleach it when they play outside. That's what they do.
In time, they'll be going into to the salon with a dog eared first grade photo and asking the hairdresser if they can give them that color too.
And the hairdresser will probably smile sadly and say "I wish I could."
May you all be having
a "Good Hair Day" today. Love, Kathy

regood morning sweetheart, I replied to the other entry which is why I say regoodmorning, lol. ok not funny....
Your so right, it's as if we had ESP going on, me and you.
Just last night we were looking at pics of Jade on her horse and the other animals on our farm.
I wish I could get my digital to work this morning, I have to bring it back to the shop I bought it from a few months ago, it's already on the frits.
Anyways what I'm trying to say is, we saw this pics of Jade at about 12 years old, her long blond natural wavy hair.
I told her don't you wish you had your long blond hair back with the straightner you have today, we could straight them the way you love them and they would be your natural beautiful color.
She just looked at me and smiled.
You see here these days the popular color for the young teenagers is black, so imagine going from a natural golden blond to black.
We even spoke of Britney Spears, she says that she shave her hair cause she was on drugs, I replied maybe she shaved her hair because they were bleached and dyed so many times that her hair was burnt and she didn't have a choice.
Jade replied; maybe hey mom....
I told Jade Britney has a lot of money and can afford wigs to continue her role in her life, if only you could have all these wigs, would you shave your hair and give them a chance to grow back to your natural color...
Jade replied; ..........????
Like usual Kathy you bring us real facts no matter how simple it can sound to one, and make all the difference to another.
Thanks for sharing your hairdresser story.
Have a super great weekend.
