I work with wigs daily and it's become apparent that after 30+ yrs. in the industry there is just not enough help for people suffering from hair loss. Oh yes, there are websites that sell wigs but what do you do once you get it?
Wigs are manufactured to fit an average head size. You may find petite or large wigs but still upon recieving them they usually fall short of "natural looking." My mother suffered a brain tumor and I was appaled at what I found availble to her in her area. I lived in another state and tried to help her find "temporary hair" long distance. As someone who styles and fits wigs I couldn't believe what little help there was for her.
The best advice I can give is don't be fooled by a picture. Wigs have attributes, they are made to mimick different textures, thickness, densities.....find a stylist experienced with wigs to advise you. A good wig stylist knows her wigs and what qualities each wig offers; and can then advise accordingly.
Your wig once chosen and ordered will then need to be custom fit. This requires tailoring just like alterations for clothing. The wig needs to be opened and stitched to fit your head shape and size. Next comes finishing touches; trimming bangs, thinning, fitting the style proportionate to face shape, head size. This is a craft and don't be fooled, not all stylist are skilled in this. A wig is a different animal and cutting one is critical as the hair won't grow back!
I fell into the field by accident through the hair industry via theater and television but as I have had friends and family deal with hair loss I've been saddened by the lack of information and talent available. I will do my best to advise anyone who seeks my assistance.
