Definition: 1) Ace No Face: A convention in the card game Euchre where a player who draws a single ace and nothing else except nines and tens can throw in their cards. 2a) Ace Noface: A terminally ill alternative piano-rock artist working to leave behind a significant musical legacy. 2b) See below. A young man was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease, a devestating degenerative neurological disorder, three years ago. He has since defiantly pursued his lifelong passion of writing music. Ace has garnered rave reviews for both his willingness to perfect his songwriting craft and his refusal to give in to his debilitating disease. A bassist with a touring indie-rock band prior to his illness, but now forced to compose his complex, multi-layered songs by hitting one key at a time with adaptive computer equipment, Ace has been known to sit in front of a computer for eight hours straight working on one song. The result of this process are songs full of depth, soul, freshness, and surprises. His piano-driven melodies are reminiscent of songwriting heroes from both the past (The Beatles, Steely Dan) and the present (Something Corporate, Semicsonic, Josh Groban, Five for Fighting, The Fray). Lyrically, Ace is honest and introspective, with a theme of defiance over grim fate: I'm not the Iron Horse, I'm not the luckiest alive. But I won't sit and wait, For the Black Angel to arrive. This optimism in the face of adversity has caught the attention of many in the media, from the Chicago Tribune to college radio. "Ace Noface creates music ...that confronts the grit of life...not soon to be forgotten, " says DJ Petros of WUMD radio. Ace was also recently one of 31 Americans with ALS who were selected nationwide to be featured in an online national awareness campaign by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Ace knows that he is one of many people who have been dealt a rough hand. Rather than throwing in his cards, though, he has made a conscious decision to focus on what he can do rather than what he cannot. As long as he is moved to create melodies and chords, and as long as his body allows, he will continue writing songs which blend contemplation, frustration, and jubilation.
