Close Autism / Autism Spectrum
Hi, my closest friend is diagnosed with autism. There has been some question of whether she sits on the aspie spectrum, in all honesty diagnosis seems irrelevant, I'm happier to just accept she has her challenges, all of which make her amazing. Her medics have always written off the chances of any capacity to function, she lives semi independantly, has a career, and socialises. She is the most amazing person I ever knew.
Treatments
- Independent Living Skills Working / Worked
- Yes it works. Obstacles were met with a positive attitude and willingness to find ways around them.
- Occupational Therapy Working / Worked
- Lots of negative experience with this over decades, it took one patient and determined OT to stick with it - we got there in the end, phenominal.
- Patience Working / Worked
- Yes, in a world where much makes no sense trust is a major issue. It can only be earned with love, patience and understanding.
- Pets Working / Worked
- She loves animals, having a pet and caring for it were major steps towards establishing independance and learning skills.
- Picture / Word Schedules Working / Worked
- We've used these to help orientate to routines and activities of daily living. Rigidity to routine is an obstacle, changes made need lots of patience.
- Sign Language Working / Worked
- It was asssumed my friend was deaf as a kid, she went to deaf school, she uses sign fluently. It's very useful.
