AAAAAHHHHHHH Relief! Mood
Tuesday, May 13, 2008 | A General Update story

I got my second opinion today and I am so totally settled in my decisions...I am NOT having a mastectomy! I have opted to have a lumpectomy and radiation! My surgery is on May 29, 2008 at 10:00am! I am ready and willing and I feel great with my decision. Oh I will have days where I think I won't make it, but those are natural feelings for facing Breast Cancer or any Cancer for that matter. I will see the Oncologist and Radiation Oncologist after surgery is over, I will feel much better when I hear more...and find out what other options I have...OMG The relief and strain is off of my shoulders, mom and I both are VERY HAPPY!

We had a wonderful brunch together and then an even better experience seeing this other doctor. She told me she would feel better if I just keep my scheduled surgery with Dr. Mclarin because he is a vascular surgeon and is trained more in handling cases such as mine because I have the clotting disorder, she hasn't had any experiences in that. Its not that I didn't like Dr. Mclarin, I just thought he didn't explain enough to me and I was still in shock and didn't know what to ask...ASK QUESTIONS....think about what you want to know and make sure you ask EVERYTHING that comes across your mind even if you think they are minor...it saves on the nerves to know exactly what is ahead of you...

Then I just got home from picking Jeff up at work and I got the letter from the BCCCP Medicaid office and I am approved!! WHOO HOOO all of this cancer treatments, surgery, follow-up care etc is covered! I don't have to worry about an expense I can't pay for!!! That was a prayer that was definitely answered! SO Today was the MOST POSITIVE DAY I HAVE HAD IN A VERY LONG TIME.....Thank You Lord, Thank You!!

That is fantastic news! Lumpectomies are not so hard to recover from, and they are getting more and more popular w/docs as a treatment. You'll do fine! Is your doc going to perform a sentinel node test during the lumpectomies? You might want to ask, it would double up procedures into one surgery--they may even be able to do the reconstruction right there too.

I did the same thing after my MRI--that is celebrated a good result with some food. My sister and Mom went w/me, and we stopped at a historical icecream parlor. I'm celebrating w/cones now everytime there is good news, so at the end of radiation that's what I'm doing. Gives me something to look foward to, a treat.

I'm glad your insurance came through. For me, through this all, my insurance co(knock on wood) has been the easiest part of it all.

What a great day all around!

Oh, Shelley, this is wonderful! Great news. You're right, you'll have some bad days, but this is so do-able....you have a fight, but it's early, and if you have to have breast cancer you are fortunate it's caught now..makes a huge difference! So, so glad you had such a nice day! Yippeeeee!!!!!!!!

I was so happy to read this! Because if you look back when you decided to have the mastectomy, the first words you said were I don't want this. I am very glad you got the second opinion and seem so much happier in your new decision! That happiness will help get you through this battle! I know you can beat this and being well informed and happy with your decisions is half the battle.
    Hugs, love, and prayers,
    Sandi
