Life is so daily Mood
Saturday, May 17, 2008 | A General Update story

I remember a famous minister saying that on his show, I think he even wrote a book about the subject, and some days I hear myself saying the same thing.

I went on a field trip yesterday with my daughters sixth grade class and it was so nice. I didn't feel so good physically and was a bit worried about my back injury and the light duty I'm on, plus managed to pick up an ITV infection to boot. How much worse can a person feel? But I had made the commitment and couldn't back out.

We went to Animal Kingdom, a Disney theme park, and I knew the girls would want to go on every thrill seeking ride there. Of course they did, and I managed to go with them even though a few chaperons opted out. I was proud of myself and really enjoyed seeing how happy they were and how much fun they had. Truth is, it doesn't matter how you feel physically or emotionally, I've found that if I can forget about me and concentrate on others, especially children. Being in nature (even if it is artificial to an extent) makes you feel good and recharges your soul. Life really can be good.

That was the nice part of my day, the sad part was on the bus ride back I started talking to another mom who my husband told me he remembered from work at the last parenting meeting. I asked her if she remembered him and she says," Oh yes". She tells me they worked together for a few years when we were first married and still sees him now and then. She's with a different company now and doesn't run into him much. But she said she was shocked to see him at the school parenting meeting and never realized he was married. She said she always thought he was single and when she met me, assumed he had married someone with kids. She couldn't believe he had any of his own. I felt so sad knowing that during the time he worked with her, we married and had our first son and still nobody at work even knew he was married. At least, not the women. Maybe the men knew, who knows, but it's still sad to think your husband would rather appear single then married with children.

The other thing that is of concern is college. I've finished my Associates now and have to move on to a four year University, but can't find funding. Because my husband makes a decent living, I don't qualify for financial aid and therefore am not sure how I'm going to fund two more years. I'm applying for scholarships and hope something comes through. The School Board has a program to fund the last two years, if you plan to continue teaching and I do. But with all the cutbacks, I'd have to wait until next year to apply.

So all considered, life can be great one minute, but not so great the next.

Be well, my friends...

Is it just me, or have you noticed it ,too? Scholarships are few and far between for people over the age of 30; either that or I'm not looking in the right places.

I agree, I have had a hard time finding scholarships for older students. People often assume if you're older and especially a woman who is working for the school board, there is tons of money available. But I have not found that to be true. The only time I had no problem finding financial aid was when I was divorced with children and unemployed. Then, you can get everything accept living expenses paid, which is a catch twenty-two. Obviously you have to live somewhere and feed those children. Hard to do without a job and relying on a broken system to support you, because if you work enough to support yourself and your family, you loose the assistance.
