My actions and my behaviour make me sick
I have just finished the last essay for my Psychology degree (-no more work now, i'm not sure what to do with myself!) which was about psychosis and schizophrenia. While I was looking for articles and research I found some information about the link between childhood meningitis and neurological/ behavioural problems in later life.
This is really interesting as I had meningitis when I was 8, and now I wonder if a lot of my psychological problems stem from that. Things such as self-esteem, concentration and behaviour problems in teenage years can apparently be affected by the illness - I don't know if this is just me looking for reasons and justifications for the way I feel, based on a biological cause rather than an environmental one - maybe it would make me feel better if I knew that I have a dysfunctional brain, and it might stop me from blaming myself for my behaviour and mistakes. Or it might make me feel absolved of all responsibility and make me apathetic. Who knows.
I'm going to ask my mum when I next see her if she thinks my behaviour got worse after my illness.
