Love Letters Mood
Friday, July 11, 2008
Mother passed away on March 17th she was 90. Papa passed six years ago. While cleaning out her things I came upon an envelope marked "Personal". Do not enter. Of course, I looked inside and found another envelope tied with ribbon and a cigar box filled with their lover letters to one another from 1939 to 1947.

Papa was chief engineer on the "Gripsholm", in the Swedish Merchent Marines. Mother was a Bookkeeper for the Bell Ribbon Company. They met in the Icelantic Club, in Brooklyn, New York. They married in 1945.

The letters are beautiful and filled with their longing and love for one another. Papa wrote from every Port of Call because Sweden was neutral during the War. He wrote about people onboard who were fleeing from nazi occupation, but mostly he wrote about his undying love for his darling and how much they missed each others love.

After they were married their love letters grew more intense and beautiful. They both wrote how they wanted a little girl and a little boy. How these children would be loved and taken care of by them both.

Honestly, I could not even finish reading all the letters, telegrams and postcards. There are hundreds of them. I never knew of their existence. They are personal. And I feel like a voyeur going through them. Though I know they would not mind me knowing how much in love they were with one another.

All those years together and now the lovers are merged together and spread over the sea as per their wishes.

What to do with the love letters? I have no one who would want them. So they stay in the cigar box and frayed ribbons.

What a beautiful treasure for you. You now know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are a "love child". I hope my children know that they are as well...
