My first entry Mood
Sunday, March 16, 2008 | A General Update story

Just starting this-I am a terminal cancer patient and on hospice. I have pancreatic cancer.  My oncologist thought I would be dead last October-but I am alive and kicking! -boy was he wrong!   I am in remission of an undetermined length.

I enjoy life every day.   I am an RN-so  I am doing what I do best-trying to help others.  I was a home health and hospice nurse.  Previous nursing was in Oncology and Medical-Surgical in large hospitals in Florida.  I now live in New Mexico.

I have a very supportive and loving wife and daughter and 2 year old granddaughter.

My other problems are tinnitus-very difficult to deal with-I have had ringing in my ears for nearly 3 years -and my tinnitus effects me on a daily basis more than my cancer.

I have very dry eyes- as a result of my chemotherapy-so my eyes give me problems too-I use eye drops all day long and am on Restasis.

The chemo nearly killed me-blood transfusions, platelets, etc.  I now have a permenant low blood count of my white and red cells-which means I can bleed easily and get infection easily.

I have a great faith in God-some days my faith is stronger than others.

The book that has helped me the most is by Rabbi Harold Kushner--"Why Bad Things Happen to Good People."  I am not Jewish-but his thought and understanding of God have been  a great help to me.

I found this board a few days ago-and now do what I do best-try to help and be an inspiration to others.  I was a high school science teacher before becoming a nurse in 1983.

I loved computer work,  reading-mainly non-fiction -especially ancient history.

I am an Amazon.com, Audible.com and Netflix Junkie!

I found IMDB.com   an Internet Movie Data Base-and I spend hours there too!

I enjoy philosophy and comparative religious study.

I love Music especially Classical, Christian,  Smooth Jazz and Classic Country and Oldies.

I love watching old-classic movies and taking short walks-I tire easily.

God bless everyone I come into contact with on this site!

You are amazing. I wish I had the courage and strength that you do. Maybe that is what is keeping you going thru all of this. What an inspiration!!!!!!

Hi Art, You are a busy person. You don't have time to be sick! What a special person you are going through this and still helping and supporting others. We are blessed to have people like you in the nursing field. I was at the hospital the other day and saw one of the nurses who took care of my mom the day she died and I again told her how much we appreciated her for the care she provided to my mom in her last hours and the support she gave to us. People don't forget people like you. I'm so glad you are doing better than the doctor thought you would do. That is wonderful. I wish many good days. God bless you. Debbie

Today is Easter-and the sun is shining. The mountains still have snow on top-but here the flowers are starting to come up out of their winter sleep. A beautiful day to be alive and enjoy nature. God bless!
