Finding Social Groups & Friends For Asperger Teens. Mood
Tuesday, April 1, 2008 | A Rambling story

I'm beginning to wonder why it's easier to find help for teens with Asperger's in some others than it is in others? I've searched in several different places, but you wouldn't think that here in New York City it would be that hard.  I realize that Brooklyn might be considered 'No man's land', especially these days, but I'd even gone so far as to seriously think about starting up a 'Meetup' group myself for those of us who live in Brooklyn, the only real draw-back, finding the time and a location to get started from.  Having a younger sibling (yes, I still consider the late forties to be young) who is diagnosed as 'learning disabled' (mild mental retardation), and a nephew (a teenager) who shows signs of having Asperger's (am still trying to locate groups that will help him to social more, and perhaps make friends somewhere down the road.)maybe a lot to deal with, but if I didn't have God (and my family) I don't know where I might have been by now.

In the mean while, would those of you here who have teens (13-19) be able to give me some input on what you've had to face as they've gotten older, and what issues they might have experienced when it came to their education (comprehension-wise), as my nephew seems to do extremely well in Math and Reading, but in other areas such as Global studies and Science we seem to be having some problems because of his comprehension.  Thanks for any help that you can provide and God bless.   Smile

P.S.  We're working on getting him tutorial help, but when it comes to Asperger's, you're never really sure what places like Sylvan, EScore, and the others are capable of doing to help these students.
