    About Me

I've been a packaday smoker for 32 years and have only been able to quit for more than a day ONCE in that time (2 yrs ago for 34 days). However, I've got a good feeling about this quit and have done a lot of legwork beforehand; I lurked in this site for a couple of weeks reading everything I could, I found a therapist with some expertise in smoking cessation, joined a gym in my neighborhood and hired a personal trainer , and filled a prescription for Chantix. I quit on 2/20/08 and have not looked back! Ok, well, I try not to look back!

    Interests

Married, father of two daughters. Avid golfer, boater, fisherman and musician. Christian.

    • Close Smoking Addiction & Recovery

I've been smoking since I was 19 yrs old, I'm 51 now and want to quit (finally). I've tried twice before, last time in 2006 and was successful for about a month. I started Chantix today, therapy 3 weeks ago and started with a personal trainer 2 weeks ago. (that was 2/13/08 it's now 2/26/08 I've been smoke free for a week now and am finding this group to be SO helpful.)

      Treatments

      Chantix Working / Worked
2/26/08 - Followed the instructions, have been smoke-free for a week now and finding this medication to be extremely helpful in managing cravings.. the only side effect I've experience have been wildly vivid dreams. also, if I take the second pill too late trouble staying asleep. But, taking the second pill no later than 5 or 6p helped the sleeping. also, ONLY take it with some food, I've had no nausea doing that.
      Nicotine Patch Somewhat Helpful
found them to be very itchy and didn't like knowing I still had to go through nicotine withdrawl.
      Psychotherapy Working / Worked
saw 3 weeks before my quit date to help me prepare a quit plan, have been seeing once a week since. our sessions are really focused on my quit and have been helpful.
      Support Groups Working / Worked
I tried twice before this quit, both times with a commercial support group / classroom program called SmokeEnders. The first time, in 1998, I got right up to quit day and bailed.. The second time, 2006, I quit (also used the patch) but picked up again after about 34 days. However, that wasn't a real support group but those aspects that were (the interaction with other active quitters) convinced me to find a support group this time.
