MY BEST FRIEND
I met my best friend when I was only 5. We went to kindergarten together and got along great. We went through school together until we graduated. I started having sleep-overs at her house when we were 8. We played and talked about everything we could image. As we entered junior high, we both decided to join the school band. We both played the drums. We played concerts until we began high school. We started really having fun then. We began playing in the marching band. We were able to travel all over the state with our football team. Back at school, we joined the school newspaper. We wrote stories and helped get the paper to the printers on time. Sometimes that required us to stay up 'til 3 a.m. We didn't mind that at all. We were just out to have some fun. We did a lot of our firsts together, getting drunk, smoking cigs., and then smoking pot. We were inseparable. When we finally graduated, we went our separate ways. She went into the army and I started college. Over the years we kept up with each other. We phoned, we wrote letters, and shared everything going on in our lives. Her first post was in New Jersey. She became homesick and depressed. I took a flight to see her and we were, one again, happy as clams. She went to Korea next and I was concerned. We wound up running up huge phone bills with a lot of stamps bought too. Her last post was in Texas, where she met the man of her dreams. They were married and she ended her service in the army. I didn't get to attend her wedding, (was working way too much). I finally got to meet her husband when I took a vacation and drove to Texas. I would travel anywhere just to hear her laugh. We spent a long weekend together and then I had to leave. Back to work, I went, until we met again. In January of 1991 she and her husband returned to Alabama. It was a sad occasion, she had come home to bury her mom. As they left for Texas my thoughts were with her, and then I got that call. She never made it home, you see, she died in a car wreck on her way back home. I couldn't believe this. No, it wasn't true! She died the same week of her mother's death. There couldn't be something so cruel. I attended her funeral and all was a blur. All I remember is her husband coming to console me and saying he was truly sorry. I carry her with me within my heart. Some day I'll see her again, and then we'll have a laugh. I love you, my dearest friend. Rest in peace. Luna Kay Mayo: November 28, 1965 - February 4, 1991.

Its clear that she was a special person. You were fortunate to have her in your life. Yes, it will be a very special time when you're able to see her again---maybe in another 50 years? Thanks for sharing. Hope things are a bit better.

what a beautiful friendship you have. I'm so sorry she's gone from you right now. When I think of seeing my loved ones again, I try to think about how much fun we'll have and all the stuff we can catch up on. (((hugs)))

I honor the memory of such a true friend. And I am humbled and grateful to be a participant in such a cleansing spiritual event as this.
