Meeting Parents-To-Be Mood
Tuesday, March 4, 2008

My days are quite busy around these times...flu/RSV/stomach ailments seem to be increasing exponentially...but there is something that always helps me get through these long winter days.  A couple of days a week, I have the opportunity of meeting couples who are about to enter the world of parenthood.  Some come to me with questions in hand trying to determine if I might be the right fit for both them and their soon to be newborn.  Others just want to make sure the right "vibe" is there as it may be the beginning of a nearly 20 year relationship with the family.  And no matter what and how many questions there are, I really do enjoy every moment with them.

I see the glow of anticipation (or is it anxiety? hmm) from both parents and know they are about to enter a whole new world that no one and no thing can prepare them for.  I try to answer their questions in a relaxed manner so their anxiety is hopefully minimized and emphasize the joys and wonders of what they are about to encounter.  And most of all, I let them know their parental instincts will kick in and while I will certainly keep an eye out for any medical concerns, I stress my other role is to work with their parenting style and keep them along the path they have chosen....as my experiences have taught me there are many approaches to parenthood (and maybe just a few that need some redirecting).

Wonder who I'll be meeting tomorrow...

Dr. Jeremy

That's nice...I did not have a good greeting from my Ped. I talked to the Office Mgr, then one Ped Doc came in between visits, and didn't really have an opportunity to feel her out. Then, there were 3 other Ped Doc's there.

Since I am a Nurse, I am very picky...I am not happy where we are now with our Ped Doc's, I know I need to change, just haven't done it yet.

I don't know if it's b/c I'm a Nurse I am missing out on info they provide to others or what? But, my specialty is Cardiac, not Peds...and yet, I had a really great maternal instinct that kicked in, I still would like some pointers along the way.

Thanks for looking forward to meeting new parents to be, and their babies to be!
