Dr. Jeremy, I'm reaching out to this CP support group because my boyfriend has a 22 yr old daughter with CP. She is both physically and mentally (autism?) disabled. He shares custody of her with his ex wife and is an amazing father. For a man who has such a challenging responsibility he cares for her with ease and considers her a joy, not a burden. She has a sitter during the day but he cares for all her needs when the sitter is gone. I am hopeful you may have some wisdom or suggestions for a problem we are having. I have 2 daughters, 10 and 14 who are beautiful, happy, smart, caring girls. When my relationship with this man began we would occasionally bring them to his house and they met his daughter and would sit with us and visit her. Though she doesn't communicate much she was not disturbed by their presence as they are quiet and gentle with her. My boyfriend sees my daughters as a blessing to her. Our problem is that his ex wife thinks the daughter sees and hears them in the house and is sad because she can't be normal like them. She thinks that if the daughter hears her father interacting with my daughters that she will be sad. The ex wife forbids my daughters from being there when he has his daughter. We have agreed to this just to keep the peace for now. We know that she needs professional help to get beyond this but she refuses to unless she finds a therapist who has a daughter with CP also because nobody else would understand. Hard to find...we've looked. Any advice, suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm With You

I know..is this heat ever going to let up? No worries about the blog. I think I was just in one of those overwhelmed moods...three boys (two teenagers) and a job that never seems to let up. I have so many funny stories if you are interested. California does have one thing to thank the governator for, he did start a healthy eating policy in our schools. Our district chose to follow it. No sweets and junk in the classroom at all. Anyhoo, hope your daughter is enjoying second grade. It is a great year and they still like their teachers...lol! Thanks for the message and the hug too. Take a swim or hit the beach! or watch the Chargers?
