Just like my oldest 10 yr. old son, my youngest 5 yr. old daughter was officially diagnosed with ADHD today and is to begin Concerta tomorrow (also just like her brother). My only concern is that the side effects of stomach ache and dizziness are difficult to keep away unless they eat and drink every 3 hours even though they are not hungry. With my son, he's old enough that I can explain this to him and he understands and works with me to keep the side effects away so he can stay on the medication because he also sees how it helps him. She's 5... with ADHD... Need I say more? We have begun the parent classes, my son will join an anxiety support group next month, and they have begun their therapy sessions, it's a slow start though... The psychiatrist also said that if the medication and helping her over the summer is not enough by first report card of next year then she strongly recommends obtaining an IEP at the school because she does show signs of a processing problem or something, but just like her brother, it could just be the ADHD causing all the struggles, we'll see...
You must feel so good that the diagnosis is there - and you do seem to get such a lot of support from the parent classes, I cannot imagine anything like this over here in U.K. Brilliant. That is difficult the eating and drinking if she doesnt WANT to eat, though. Does chocolate count!? I do wish you absolutely all the best with your daughter, so pleased that you can now go forward - here is keeping fingers crossed for good results......love to you...CathrynnX

Concerta worked for my son for quite a while. i did notice he ate a lot more and was thirsty alot, too. He was 6 when he was on it. He did get the hang of it. We ended up having to switch because it didn't work for more than 6 months. Nothing helped until Ritalin LA came out. He's been stable for 2 years now. It's been a miracle. My son is qualified for special education and has a personalized IEP in place. We had to get both his pediatrician and his psychiatrist to sign that he needs to be qualified as other health impaired. They of course did knowing Dylan. Things do get easier over time. You are off to a good start.
