    I'm a parent of 4, two adopted with special needs, and I have 3 grandchildren (all special needs). I've recently lost a best friend to suicide, a dad to terminal illness and mom is not well. We also lost a near family friend. I am studying for MA in Mental Health & Guidance.

      Type: Loss of a Relative

      I've lost my best friend to suicide, another life long friend to a sudden heart attack, my dad to terminal illness and my mom is dying. Presently I have another dear friend in stage 4 cancer. It hasn't been easy but I am trying to continue to move ahead. I am working with elementary children who grieve now.

      Treatments

      Grief Counseling Working / Worked
      Group: Say good-bye and let go for 4 weeks, put all reminders away for 4 weeks, desensitations, immersion and then the getting on & remembering with joy.
      Helping Others Working / Worked
      volunteering at elementary school with grieving children and writing in a daily journal affirmations. I did a loss program that did work. You have to really be willing to feel the loss first.
      Keeping Busy Somewhat Helpful
      I entered school and forced deadlines on myself to keep my mind busy; I would cry a great deal only when I put on sad movies; I then allowed myself 15 minutes/day to cry and then do something for me. It seems to have helped a lot.

      Having my little dog, Missy helps
      Poetry Working / Worked
      Yes, it helped me realize the pain and pleasure of knowing these people and keeps their spirits alive for me with good feelings in place of loss.
      Prayer Working / Worked
      yes, I talked to them often and prayed for strength
      Psychotherapy Working / Worked
      Group. Yes, it helped to know others and work with them. However, some people get stuck and you have to remember to do your own work and move on instead
      Remembering Working / Worked
      Yes, I use a light to remember those I've lost. This is put on every nite and I say good-night. I makes me feel good and settles it for the night; like a switch going off for the night.
      Scrapbooking Working / Worked
      In the process now; I remember the fun times more now.

      Yes, having friends listen helped. I just learned not to overdo it.

      I suffered from anxiety as a child, now my 14 year old daughter is suffering, social and personal anxiety. Is this site only for teens or can older people join? Thanks, debiA

    • Open Self-Injury

      I was a SI during my young years; I also had a eating disorder, anorexia and bulemia. My mom was psychiatrically ill and beat on me quite a lot; I had to survice while taking care of 3 younger siblings. Now, I'm doing graduate work on SHBs and cutting so I can help educate and counsel girls or guys with self-injurious behaviors. I have a survey for girls to fill out if interested.

      Group Therapy Working / Worked
      Was in a hospital for self-harmers and people with Multiple Personality Disorders. It was over 3 months of treatment with follow up and group with individual treatments. I learned many coping skills and no longer hurt my body or myself. I still have an occasional urge; but know how to deal with it. I know there is a way to stop and lead a better life. It has made me stronger. I will hope and offer the best I have for you and you can help me too.Thank you in advance. debido

      I kept hurting myself more with each snap; don't overuse; try to keep it to the least you can.
      S.A.F.E. (Self-Abuse Finally Ends) Working / Worked
      Many of their methods helped me to find my way
      Squeezing Ice Working / Worked
      I ran it on my arm until it hurt; it worked fine
      Talking Working / Worked
      definitely, it helps to talk with people who hold judgement and share the same feelings; it also helps to seek help by helpers who can guide you into other ways to cope with life. It makes you stronger.
