Here at UConn, the Relay for Life is being held as we speak. It went from 5 p.m. last night and goes til 12 noon today. I am part of the planning committee for it...when coming to campus and hearing that they do in fact have a Relay I definitely wanted to get involved. Anyway, I ended up being the person who is in charge of the campsites. The individual teams involved all camp out overnight, so I'm the person who ropes off a section for the tents and tells the teams to all go there.
I couldn't help out this year, because I presented my undergrad research at the University's poster presentation. It just happened to fall at the exact same time as the set up for Relay. It wasn't a huge deal but the research is a bit more important so I opted to do that. It worked out because I had another guy who was involved in the campsite committee who didn't show up all semester. Because I had been going to meetings ALLL semester long and he didn't, I recruited him to help set up yesterday before Relay began. So it's good.
As I was walking back from presenting the research I had to walk by the area where the Relay is being held. It was getting a bit dark though I could see everyone walking around the track. It just gave me this awesome feeling. Even though I'm not involved in the Relay itself [just the planning committee....I don't have enough friends here to form a team:( ], it made me feel great that so many students take the time out of their busy schedules to help out a great cause. Despite the tests, papers, quizzes, memos, research articles and more, we all take time out to be dedicated to the same cause. We all know someone who has/had cancer and are all fighting to end this horrible disease. Even though we're here to further our education, life isn't just about doing well in school. It's about taking the time out to help others. It's about being there and learning about the power we have to make a difference.
I stood there and watched the crowd go round and round for a few minutes. Then I smiled and went back to my room to go to bed. :)
