Surgeon says Disc Replacement... Mood
Thursday, July 24, 2008

I am relieved, yet upset!  The surgeon took one look at my MRI's and said "yep, you need a disc replacement."  (ok I am thinking, why did the last surgeon that looked at these same films not say that?)  I guess the other surgeon knew he was going to be moving out of state and didn't want to deal with it.  I don't know.

Anyway, the MRI films are 10 months old, so I have to go get another MRI done on August 6th to have a better picture of what is really going on currently and see the surgeon again on August 15th.  Then he said it would be probably 6 weeks before he could get me in for surgery the way his schedule is right now.  He is also waiting for the EMG results to come from the neurologist.  Then he will deal with my neuropathy and carpal tunnel, at another date.  First things first.  He says I definitely have a real pain issue.  (whatever that means)

    Dear Becky,
A disc replacement is serious stuff, please get another valued opinion. Eric

I agree with weinere, get a third and fourth opinion if you need too. Doctors now days usually recomment what their specialty is... not necessarily what is in your best interest.

I have the opinion of my chiropractor as well as my regular doctor, and I talked to one of his patience in the waiting room who had him and had a surgery done by him for a similar problem and says he is wonderful, and also he is the surgeon that fixed my Uncle's back after another surgeon messed it up badly. He pointed out the area he is talking about , and with my untrained eye I can see where it is pushing on the spinal cord. If I have another fusion the disc above will just herniate, but with disc replacement I won't loose as much mobility or range of motion and it is less likely that the discs around will herniate. I have done my homework on this, and I have talked to my other doctors about this. I am well informed.

    Becky,
If u have faith & trust in this surgeon, then stay w him. I love my doc. He knows me as a person not as a file. He knows the whole family. If i go in, he asks how the family is, if the older kids r talking to me yet. Ive told him everything.
I think ur doing the right thing. Im alwasy here for u if u wanna talk pain/body probs again. lol

    love ya hun

I am sorry you need to go for another MRI - I've had 3 in the last month so I know they're no fun. But I also have noticed that depending on the doctor, I get a different diagnosis. It's frustrating. Hugs

Sounds frustrating, but at least SOMETHING is getting done!

Definitely frustrating. At least now you know the first steps and can move forward with it if you are comfortable with this surgeon. You are now on the way to getting this taken care of and relief from the pain. Yay!

Ditto on what Cat said! But it certainly IS a frustrating process when you are hurting so much.

Hey, sorry to hear about the surgery, but it will be fabulous. I haven't had it yet, I'm holding out for a multilevel disc replacement, disc replacement is better than getting fused. I used to do medical transcriptioning for a fabulous ortho surgeon that did a procedure that i can talk to you about and see if that has been considered at all...I have absolutely no discs in my back anymore, DDD and it's the worst in my L3 to L5..what space are they looking at? I would love to talk with you about this..love this stuff.
