    About Me

Well, 49 yr. old man, 1 daughter, 5 stepdaughters and 1 stepson. Between my wife and I we have 12 grandchildren and another on the way. I've always been active, participated in athletics in school. One of the myriad problems with my back is an old football injury (fractured thoracic vertebrae and damaged ligaments) from 1972 which was never treated, or even detected until 2004. It has finally gotten so bad I can't deal with it without narcotic pain mgmt. and physical therapy. Also have a congenital back defect which causes chronic, severe sciatic pain and neuropathy in my legs. A rheumatologist I saw dx'ed me with fibromyalgia and psoriatic arthritis as well so I guess I'm in for a fun time...what little the fibro and arthritis let me remember anyway. Oh, and of course the Social Security people say I'm not disabled so I'm fighting with them. Over all, I'd give damn near anything to be able to go back to work, but I never know from one day, sometimes one hour, to the next how I'm going to be, and at times can't do hardly anything but lie in bed.

    Interests

Love outdoor activities like fishing, camping, hiking, boating, swimming, though I can't participate in them much anymore. Used to do martial arts some but can't do much of that these days either. Also like music, reading, art, travel, lots of different things.

    • Close Back Pain

since i can't say it all in 500 characters, let's just say my back and neck are a mess and the docs are at a loss what to try next

      Treatments

      Acupressure Not Working
didn't help me, though I've heard of it helping others
      Acupuncture Not Working
      worthless
      Bedrest Somewhat Helpful
sometimes helps if I am very careful of the position I lie in
      Carisoprodol Somewhat Helpful
helps some for about 2-3 hours, makes me very sleepy
      Chiropractic Adjustment Not Working
worthless, appears to have aggravated problems
      Cortisone (Injection) Somewhat Helpful
helps for about 4-10 days but is incredibly bad for your body
      Darvon Not Working
not strong enough and I am very sensitive to this drug. makes me very ill if I take more than 1 pill every 6 hours or so
      Epidural Injection Not Working
painful to get and did not stop the pain at all
      Fentanyl Working / Worked
very effective but very easy to develop dependency. used it a few times but scared to stay on it even if my doc would have let me.
      Fioricet Somewhat Helpful
too much caffiene! made me a nervous wreck though it was slightly effective on the pain
      Flexeril Not Working
this stuff belongs in the trash can
      Heat Somewhat Helpful
usually takes 1-3 hours to help. if it's going to help at all, which it does sometimes
      Hydrocodone Working / Worked
I was on it for so long my tolerance went through the roof and I became dependent. No longer effective and a very bad thing for me to take so i avoid it
      Ibuprofen Not Working
about as effective as munching candy and doesn't taste as good
      Naproxen Not Working
      see ibuprofen
      Physical Therapy Somewhat Helpful
offers temporary relief of some symptoms but due to insurance rules I am limited to a certain number of sessions per year, and they don't allow me enough
      Relaxation Not Working
      what is rest and relaxation?
      Stretching Not Working
usually hurts like hell unless I am assisted by a professional physical therapist, and even then is still a bad idea sometimes
      TENS Not Working
can't use due to hx melanoma on back and didn't help at all when I did use it
