My friend Mood
Thursday, August 7, 2008 | A Sad story

I received news from a dear friend of mine that she has started treatments for macular degeneration (an eye condition that eventually results in blindness) and also had several biopsy samples taken from her breasts this week.  The doctors didn't sound too positive about the biopsy, but she's still waiting for the results.

I met her when we were exchange students in England in the early 90s.  Although she was in her mid-40s and I in my early 20s at the time, we became very good friends and travel partners.  Without her guidance, I'm not sure how a lot of us younger students would have faired that year -- she seemed to be the "dorm mother" in a way.  She always had fresh flowers, hot tea, and a perfect pear to share.  I've always been grateful that her super sweet husband agreed to let her live out her dream of studying literature in England that year.

Since that eventful year, I visited her once in Maryland and she visited us once in Texas, but we've always kept in touch by letters and phone calls.  She's the best letter-writer I know.  She shops around for the perfect pens and always seals her envelopes with wax stamp.  I love receiving her letters -- anyone would!

Since losing Dad is still so fresh in my heart, this news of my friend has really hit me hard.  She's always been thin, healthy, and energetic -- how can she be this ill?

I want to hop on a plane right now...

Oh M., I am so sorry to hear about your friend. I know that you will be a breat support to her as she goes through this. Yeah, it's hard. I felt the same way with my best friend's mom going through some really difficult times this year (stroke and 2 heart attacks)-just seemed to hit me really hard.
We are here to hold you up. Here if you need me-taters

Oh, Jordan, that's tough. I'm so sorry. It's a lousy rule of thumb that the people with the biggest hearts have them hurt the most. Your friend is really lucky to have you.
