1980's Mood
Sunday, July 13, 2008 | A Rambling story
I was just in my group "Back to the 1980's" and I couldn't help but think of my childhood. I turned 10 in 1980 ( I was born October 2, 1970) and what a wonderful time of my life that was! I remember that my parents had an above ground swimming pool in the backyard and everyday during the summer my sister, myself, and all our friends always hung out at our house. My mom fed the neighborhood lunch almost everyday! Then there was the ice cream truck that would come every afternoon at 3PM and we would all line up for our treat. After that we would rollerskate up and down the driveway and then back in the pool! My sister and I were very lucky little girls, although my sister remembers a totally different childhood (those are her issues) my parents still live in the house we grew up in (35 years this September) both Crystal and I always had our own bedrooms, we never had to share. We had all the toys any little girl could ask for, they redid the basement (well part of it) and we had the coolest little kitchen set, the stove, sink, refrigerator, etc to play house. We had a desk and a huge chalkboard to play school. The house we lived in had the library at one end of the street (where my love for books came from) and the elementery school at the other end of the street ( we walked to school with our dog Brandy everyday from kindergarten to 4th grade) Then for 5th and 6th grade we had to ride a school bus, but the school was only a little over 2 miles away. Once we were in junior high we had to walk again, the school was just under 2 miles and anything under 2 miles you walked. We got a lot of exercise as kids without even realizing it! My parents gave us everything we could have ever wanted, and I guess until writing this I didn't realize how good we had it growing up. My dad worked during the day and my mom worked nights so we never went to preschool or daycare, we always had a parent around. My father says he wishes he had put me in some type of preschool because then maybe I wouldn't have been so painfully shy as a kid, but how was he to know that I would be afraid of my own shadow as a kid. Crystal was the total opposite, loud, loud, loud and demanded attention while I faded in the backgroud! Well, that's enough memory lane for tonight....

Sounds wonderful. I was 15 in 1980, and had my learner's permit to drive. My dad would take me out driving, and then we'd stop at McDonald's on the way home. He never said anything, but I had to have tested his "nerves of steel" with my driving skills! lol Thanks for giving me an opportunity to have a great trip down my own memory lane. Have a blessed week!
    Hugs~
