Angel Oak

"Yet, upon his limbs did fall the burden of time to come
While others watched he would wait, patient, and always ready
Time marched on, and the sentry stayed his post."

Excerpt from the poem "The Sentry" by Moongazer

Many of you join together on Sunday evenings and imagine yourselves swinging and singing together, strongly supported in the caring arms of Angel Oak.

Angel Oak. She lives her name. She’s beautiful, she’s strong, she’s steady, and she bears you well. You may leave her branches, her arms, her care, but she will not tire of you there.

You see Angel Oak is approximately 1400 to 1500 years old. When Angel was born, it would be another 1,000 years before Columbus petitioned Queen Isabella to voyage to our new world. She began her vigil sometime between the years 600 -700 A.D. What has Angel done during these 1400 years? Growing, living, staying steady staying strong. Was she once the youngest among many other Live Oaks? Probably so. Was she in the company of trees 1000 years old? Maybe, likely. In her youth were her neighbors sentries? I would think the answer can only be yes.

She is able to shade over 17,000 sq. feet. That’s right 17 thousand. Angel is strong and alive and keeping her post. They say angels walk on earth and I believe it’s true. Sometimes though they stand firmly planted offering shelter, support. Angels see us cry, hear our laughter, our thoughts, our dreams, our sorrows and yes our songs. The actions of comfort and support are their nature.

So, for the Swingers and Singers here at Daily Strength, I hope you will know the tree you imagine yourselves singing and swinging together. She resides on John’s Island South Carolina. Follow the link and study her, and I strongly recommend the poem "The Sentry".

Please remember each plays on this tree and swings and sings in differnet ways. Some like to laugh and swing and sing together. I hear many in the club like to chat together on yahoo, and have a great time. Enjoy yourselves and have fun. Some of the "Singers and Swingers" can’t come online, so throughout the evening on Sunday they transport themselves through imagination onto Angel’s strong and ample branches to swing and sing with their heart voices. For those who use heart voices, sing loud and swing high. Enjoy yourselves.

Remember in life we all enjoy the same things in different ways. Each can be good and nurturing and come from the same source.

Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks to God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools
But only God can make a tree.

Joyce Kilmer the author of "Trees" died in the second Battle of the Marne under German gunfire in 1918.  He was awarded the Crois de Guerre posthumously.

    That tree is incredible. It's mind boggling that something can be that old and still living--not a fossil. I will have to check out that link.

    Thank you Deb, so very much, for sharing this beautiful, and inspirational journal with us. :)

    You give me strength, and hope, and keep me in good spirits. together, we all stand strong, and tall, and like a tree's branches, whenever there is some windy weather, the roots, that hold all branches together, we together stay strong, and stand tall. :)
