Sometimes something happens so unexpectedly...and in such a wonderfully heartwarming way, that you can't stop smiling.I was lucky enough to have such an experience recently that I'd like to share.
Without rehashing a very sad time in my life,I will just say that my 41st birthday was in June, was very lonely, came and went without any fuss and the day started with a funeral of someone whom I loved very much.
I am an adult, and as such I shouldn't have been hurt that my family disregarded the day...but I guess, secretly,it truly hurt me.They thought that since I was greiving someone who was so dear to me ,that a birthday celebration may be inappropriate...but I would have appreciated the diversion.
Anyway,it all went to the back of my mind over the weeks since then,I got over it...no biggie.I went on vacation and was gone for nearly 2 weeks this month, not really knowing what was going on back home.
During my vacation,my neice decided that she wanted to do something nice for me. She's 10,and her folks have been having financial difficulties(as have just about everyone, with the cost of gas and everything rising!)She decided to set up a lemonade stand, and in two days she made nearly 40 dollars!(Not bad, considering that she charged 25 cents a cup!)Her mom told me THAT,but not WHY she thought to do it.
She used the money to buy me a gold chain and locket with my initial on it,saying that it was a late birthday present.I was moved to tears! She could have used the money for clothes for school, candy,to go to the mall,etc...but she thought of her Aunt Val.
She is a great kid,and her selfless gift will be cherished by me always. It was so sweet and not typical of kids these days.My own three kids(two teens and a 20 year old)never even gave me a card.It was so unexpected and sweet that I was completely taken by surprise. My faith in the goodness of today's youth has been restored. She is....and always was....an exceptionally loving and giving person.Cara...YOU are the best gift!
