Religion and Psychosis...
Posted on 07/28/08, 05:10 am
Greetings to all... and welcome again to all the newcomers... we've had some postings recently about 'Psychosis and God', 'Schizophrenia and God', 'Religion and Health' etc... how about 'Religion and Psychosis' now...
What is 'psychosis' afterall?... Doctor reports sometimes talk about 'psychotic episodes'... We find such terminologies with diagnoses of 'Schizophreniform Disorder', 'Schizophrenia', 'Manic Depressive Psychosis' (also known as Bipolar Disorder it seems)...
We find with the mention of psychosis the further mention of terms like 'religious delusions', 'delusions', 'hallucinations'... and we hear in ordinary talk about 'illusions'...
So... what about religion and psychosis?... In religion we hear the mention of 'revelations'... and more specifically 'divine revelations'... but this issue of 'psychosis' seems to create a confusion around 'revelations or divine revelations'... it seems that we may mistakenly believe that God may be speaking to us... or trying to tell us something...
Some speak about something known as an 'epiphany'... is there anything else to be shared around such issues...
Peace and blessings

I'm thinking it's all in the perception. You can have a genuine experience of God and it can be something either disturbing or uplifting and if you tell you pdoc about it, you get called psychotic. The thing is, maybe there are some visions that are psychosis and some that are not. How to distinguish? I believe that a vision or experience sent by God will prove itself out in what comes of the experience... as they say in the Bible, the fruits it produces. If it's unproductive and has nothing to say that is of particular help to you or anyone else, then I think this didn't come from God and needs to be ignored or at least not followed. Knowing the difference can be tough. -

Do something about it. Paint it. Sculpt it. Make cinema. Bring it to the light and manifest it. You are not unique. -

In my experience, there are very real things in the spiritual realm. Having said that, unless one is in that spiritual realm, talk of such things breeds contempt and ridicule from "the carnal man". To non believers, what else is there but scientific jargon like psychosis and religious delusions? Unfortunately, most of the reported cases of people hearing voices and acting on those influences are generally bad. You don't hear so much about miracles as you do about serial killers so it's only natural that people are afraid of or at least very skeptical when it comes to spiritual things. And churches, again, unfortunately, have a bad reputation of the folks being hypocrites and the preachers being greedy crooks and maybe fornicators too. I used to say: "God is good but people suck!"(myself included) Well, I think it comes down to this: "How much do you want it?" If the "it" is the Truth then it must be purchased. ("buy the truth and sell it not" Proverbs 23:23) I don't think this is just talking about money but a person must really want the truth more than anything! What I believe is: In this spiritual realm (which is actually more "real" than the physical realm that we see everyday) there are only two sources. The One, Jesus, the other, Satan. The closer we get to either source (through righteousness or wickedness, respectively speaking) the more "revelations." The key then is to know for certain how to tell which source is which and how to tap in to which ever source you prefer. That may sound strange but we're talking about abstract and invisible things! An instruction manual is therefore needed. Hence, The Bible. And not to be outdone, Satan has his own too and more and more followers as time is winding down. We haven't even gotten into angels & demons yet but, suffice it to say that they do their respective master's bidding. Angels help, proclaim and protect people while demons afflict, torment and try to kill people. Then, on the other hand, the human brain is the real "final frontier" and we've only just begun to try to understand it. This is where I could go off on a scientific lecture on our vast untapped subconscious mind but I AM a believer in God after all. I've had way too many "coincidences" for me to think that this is all a scam...It's just that there is a price to pay...Jesus said: "take up your cross and follow me" For many "this is a hard saying; who can hear it?" I think many people feel that the jury's still out but there will be a final verdict one day..."Yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on" from Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" -

The ultimate Epiphany is the revelation of Jesus Christ. Only He can give it to you and if He does, you will know who the Father is. Matthew 16:13-20, John 10:30, 14:8,9 -
