Obama's statement on the ADA Restoration Act

I wonder if Obama will be the leader to strongly support the Rights of People with Disabilities? And, for us, I wonder if he will reverse the ban on federal monies to support stem cell research?

What do you think?

What issues do we face politically that Obama might make a difference in, if he is our next presdient?July 02, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Barack Obama today released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Americans with Disabilities Restoration Act, H.R. 3195.

"We have a collective responsibility to ensure that every American has access to the opportunity to fulfill their dreams and live independent lives. With nearly fifty-four million Americans living with disabilities today, it must be a priority for our government to do everything it can to protect and respect the needs of these Americans.

"The House of Representatives took an important step today by passing this legislation, and I applaud Leader Hoyer and Congressmen Conyers, George Miller, and Sensenbrenner for their efforts. I look forward to working with a true leader on this issue, Senator Harkin, to reaffirm our nation's commitment to giving every American an equal chance."

Well, I think that the "pendulum" for politics has changed direction and is swinging away from super conservatism. But I just don't think that many things will happen that will make a difference: nobody in Congress can agree on anything. You can start with a bill that has a specific purpose and what comes out as law or regulation is completely irrevelevent and gutless.

What will be interesting for us is that Michelle Obama's father suffered from MS so my expectation is that we will see it highlighted in the news a bit more, should they make it to the Presidency.

Wow- Marge, I did not realize that his father-in-law had MS. For us, that is good news. Like you said, there might be more focus on it, and I am sure Obama will support stem cell research! Thanks Leanna

Sounds like a "pet the kitty" statement, but I believe the jury is still out. Honestly, what choice does the country have??? More of the same, or a new democratic face along with a democratic Congress and Senate. I think that the Congress and Senate both need a Democratic President to really get the ball rolling. Our current lame-duck handpuppet is just not going to do it... I await my wooing...
