Rescued Pets

A little over two years ago I found out I couldn't work and began life at home. Two weeks in my better half brought home a little longhair weiner girl who was given to her friend by people who were going to take her to pound. She apparently did her business on floor and they didn't want her. I fell in love with her sweetness and after 1 accident she has never gone on floor. Betty barks or drags my shoe out on floor if I'm not paying attention. We live close to Military base and she gets scared from the booms. Being a high stress type dog she needs more attention and lots of assurance, but I don't mind. She is very loving and knows when I'm upset. she will jump up and get in my face with kisses and remain at my side until I'm better. When I'm in bad pain she knows and gives me love. This is why I feel a rescued dog makes a better dog. And they know, when they are unconditionally loved they work double hard to stay...even though she doesn't have to because she is so SPECIAL to me

camiam, you are absolutely right about rescue dogs. I adopted my first dog Toby from the SPCA he was dumped with a sibling then put into the same pen and his sibling was adopted. He was a chich/terrier mix. I had him for six years. He had to be put to sleep last July due to a inoperatable tumor in his nose.

On June 4th I adopted another rescue dog from the SPCA. He's Riley and he's 7. He's pug/chic/terrier mix.

They both are so sweet. Toby had some anxiety issues and I babied him too much. But he was my love. Riley's a little more independent though he does follow me everywhere. But he's okay in the car in fact he loves to ride in them. He can be left in the car without a problem (though I don't do that very often and then it's only for a little while).

Take care and love your special Betty girl. I will do the same to my Riley dog.

I wish everyone had this same belief about rescued pets. I get frustrated with people who buy from pet stores and breeders. Millions of dogs and cats are killed every year because there are not enough homes for them. If everyone with a pet would spay or neuter and people adopting a new pet would always go to shelters, we could end the tragic genocide of dogs and cats.

I went to the county kill shelter to find my dog, but in San Diego all the small dogs are usually taken from the county shelters by one of the rescue organizations. So we found my very special needs dog Toofy at the Humane Society. Toofy suffers from separation anxiety. He'd been returned to the shelter by 3 different families before us. I think his first owner died. So we are his fifth family. But we've had him for 6 years and are absolutely devoted to his happiness.

When we wanted a cat, we went back to the county kill shelter. Toofy loves cats, so we took him around to all the cats and one little kitten was only one of two cats who didn't hiss at Toofy. So we took him home and he's been our kitty baby for 5 years.

I have rescued several dogs and cats from the shelter; the latest is Liza, a lovely blue shorthair kitty. Before that was Festus, an Irish Wolfhound, Great Pyrenees mix. But I have also had just as many find me; they show up at the farm, and it is as if they know this is a safe place for them. Right now, I have the White Boy; a blue-eyed(but he CAN hear) white tom cat who is only part time, for the moment. I am waiting for the day that he sticks around long enough to get him to the vet for that all-important surgery!

cal i totally agree with you i have only ever had rescue dogs, i cant see why people would want to buy a dog for loads of money when there are loads of dogs out there that need our love and attention
