You';; do what is best for your furry friend. I knwo it is a hard decision to make but watching her grow up from being a puppy to an adult dog to an old dog~~~~~how could you stand to see her in pain. After all she took care of you for 12+ years. Soon it will be time for you to take care of her needs. I don't mean to sound uncaring. The truth is I care very deeply. I just hate to see an animal suffer.
God Bless,
Lee

stress of caring for a sick pet

My dog, Hayley, is 12 and a half and has nerve damage in her back that limits her ability to walk. She also has arthritis in her front legs so getting her to do anything is a challenge. She's having acupuncture to help her walk and it's made a huge difference, it's just that she's in a fair amount of pain that stresses me out.
She's doing remarkably well overall, it's just that seeing her like this upsets me to no end. If she gets to the point she can't walk, I don't know what we'll do....

Thanks for your imput. I'm going to make sure she has pain meds to help her sleep and other than that, she's doing great--very alert, wants to do stuff and whatnot. -

If she gets to the point she can't walk, then you have a decision to make. You don't want her to suffer, which is what you would do if let her continue in declining health. Love her enough as she has loved you for over 12 years, and mercifully have her put to sleep. Hugs... -

I am praying for you and Haley !!! I know the Lord will let you know when it is time to make that hard decision. You are a wonderful mom and care deeply for Haley....that is evident. I have a cat that is 16 and he is so far in no pain....just showing signs of kidney disease. Making that decision is so hard to do. I know you wont let her suffer needlessly!!! God bless you and keep you!!! -

Thanks for all your love and concern. Hayley is doing remarkably well the last few days. She has a tendency to want to overdo it and ends up in pain. I have some vicodin I gave her a few nights ago and hope to get more from the vet for those nights she needs it. Other than the pain, she's doing very well. I've got her on some amino acids that help control pain as well so as long as she doesn't overdo it, hopefully she'll be with us for several more months.
I hadn't noticed how weak she'd gotten till I had her at the vet last Thursday so she's getting canned food as well as some homemade beef broth on her kibble so she'll eat more. I think eating more has really helped as well. She knows she can have just about anything she wants and she manipulates me but who cares??? So long as she's doing okay, I'm thrilled to death. -

aww, it is so sad and hard watching them get old and their bodies starting to break down, i saw it with my Shadow, I did whatever I could to keep her comfy until one day the vet told me no matter what she did she could no longer be comfortable and then i knew she was prob suffering but never showed it.. it broke my heart but we had to let her go to doggie heaven.. if she could have stayed with us forever, she would have.good to hear she seems to be doing well .. keep us posted!. -

I can relate I adopted a 17yrs old chihuahua frm the shelter 2 yrs ago she has many health issues on so many differnet meds. I keep up on all watch for any changes freak if her eating habits change ( i make her chicken and when shes real fussy i give her beechnut chicken w/ broth baby food jst to make sure she eats something) its very trying to deal with. My vet says tho its quality not quanity. But when i bring her in there for something that jst pops up. He always says to me (knock wood and thank god) shes a little fighter she doesnt want to give up. A few months ago i found sores in her mouth and rushed her to a ER vet at 2am they said teeth needed to be pulled called my vet my vet said its goin to b risky if she wakes up pick her up at 2pm well took her in at 8 they called me by 9am and said come and get her around 10am b/c she woke up and was standing and everything they were amazed and i was relived!!! But to tell u the truth i have a special spot in my heart for older dogs.I'll be praying for you :) -

I understand. I just took my boys to the vet yesterday. I can't keep weight on them. They are skeletal. Yet they eat 3 cans and a bowl of kibble a peice each meal. Thought they had worms but tested negative. Tested for heart worms still negative. Got some meds and will take them back in a month to re weigh. They were having killer diarreah but thankfully that stopped. I too am frantic.
