Methadone..
Posted on 07/24/08, 09:03 pm
Today my pain management doctor suggested me trying methadone. I declined for now. I have heard bad stuff about it... but I have tried everything else... currently on Lyrica, Cymbalta and Oxycodone and they only take the edge off. I did a bit of research online tonight and it seems Methadone helps nerve pain more than the other opiods. Has anyone tried it... and if so... did it work for you? ~Debbie

I was given Methadone for break-thru pain. To be honest it does NOT help that much for me. Sometimes it does take off the sharp edge and sometimes I can't tell its doing anything. But guess working part time is better than none. I am cautious using it and I never take over 2 pills in a 24 hour period. Maybe I need to up the dosage, I don't know. I have not had any side effects from it. I am worried about upping the dose, but at times I just can't bear the pain. I would like to hear from other Methadone user's also. What's the dosage they take and any side effects. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!!! -

I have been on methadone for 6 years off and on. It is the one pain med that continues to work for me without having to increase the dosage. I take oxycodone for breakthrough pain, 10 mg. methadone 4 times a day. Sometimes I think it is not working but when I stop taking it I can tell that it was working. I try to clear it out of my system 3 or 4 times a year for 2 to 3 weeks and it seems to work better afterwards. -

I have tried lots of different things for pain, most just barely take the edge off the pain but is still there i have also tried smoking marajuana a couple times with some success it takes away the nausea (from the pain) and relaxes the stiff tense sore muscles and allows me to get around easier. -

I was on methadone for about 2 years. It worked wonders for the pain but it made me not think straight and I had to up the doseage a few times to get relieve.
This drug is nothing to mess around with. The withdrawals can be aweful and if you get the flu and can't hold anything down you are going to go through withdrawals. After that happening to me a few times I found that asking my doctor for a few pain patches in case of emergency was the trick and made my flu systoms a lot easier to handle. If you are going to start this med have those patches just in case because the flu systoms will be nothing compared to the withdrawal systoms you will get.
I started on 5mg 3 times a day and when I stopped I was at 10mg 4 times a day. My new pain doctor wants me to start methadone again but I will not do it. My forgetfulness and just feeling out of it isn't woth the relief for me. Hope this helps some! -

i find it very helpful for pain, but it is not something that you can just take for breakthrough pain - you have to take it religiously, especially after you've been on it for awhile, or withdrawl will hit you like a bat out of hell!
it's definately worth a shot, though - as long as you take your pills within the same window of time every day, it will do WONDERS for you!
