This same comment thread is also under the topic called "What IS Neuropathy" here in this Neuropathy group. I thought it would be helpful for it to be here under the Neuropathy Resource page too.

Neuropathy is a result of damage to the nervous system following infection, disease, injury, certain medications or is hereditary with no known cause.

Neuropathy can cause weakness, reduced or lost sensation people may develop tingling, burning, shooting pain or numbness; others may experience sharp or dull pains and muscle fatigue, cramps, hot or icy cold at the same time and extreme sensitivity to touch. It may also reduced fine motor coordination, possibly leading to paralysis at the worst extreme. Other types affect other parts of the nervous system and effect digestion, balance, vision, and many other bodily functions. These feelings are associated with.

It can develop with many medical conditions, such as traumatic nerve injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, epilepsy, spinal cord injury, syringomyelia, cancer and many others. Cancer-related neuropathic pain may follow nerves invading the tumor or nerve damage from surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. There may also be painful swelling of the arms, legs and abnormal sweating.

    TYPES of NERVES
    Cranial, Central, Peripheral, Autonomic

    WHAT NERVES it Damages
Motor – nerves responsible for voluntarily movement
Sensory – touch, temperature, limb position
Autonomic – breathing blood pressure and digestion – everything your body does automatically without you telling it to do it.

    COMMON TYPES of Neuropathy
    Polyneuropathy – most common – PERIPHERIAL -
Mononeuritis multiplex – Diabetes - many peripheral nerves effected
Mononeuropathy – only a single nerve is effected
Small fiber peripheral neuropathy – often idiopathic no known cause
AUTONOMIC neuropathy – involuntary muscles / organs, nausea etc..
    Enteric neuropathy – degeneration

Best way to think of it is… you either have one, the other or both… Small fiber or large fiber

TYPES OF DAMAGE to the Nerve
Compressed, Sheath Loss, Disconnection and Degeneration
    http://www.backpain-guide.com/Chap...

Myelin (insulation around nerves – like if you were to put a glove on your hand and the glove starts to deteriorate) it starts to thin out and gets short circuited and signals are broken, causing weakness, numbness and pain

    NEUROPATHY CAUSES
    Diseases,
    Nerve Compression
    Entrapment – pressure
    Laceration – severed nerves
    Toxins – chemical
    Inflammation – swelling of neurons
    Idiopathic – no cause

    HOW IT’S DIAGNOSED
EMG, nerve biopsy, spinal tap, nerve conduction test, or seen by a neurologist Symptoms are usually the only method of diagnosis

    HOW MANY PEOPLE are effected
20 million Americans are suffering from peripheral neuropathy
60% of diabetics will develop nerve damage
3% of the the population is effected

    HOW IT’S TREATED
It's easy to diagnose neuropathy but is difficult to treat because it is many times idiopathic, which means the doctor doesn't know why the patient has developed nerve damage. However, the causes we understand most are malnutrition, repetitive motion resulting in carpal tunnel syndrome, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, exposure to toxins or poisons, and inherited genetic disorders.

When a doctor can identify one of these causes, she can treat the pain at the source, by correcting or treating diabetes for example. Unfortunately, if the neuropathy is idiopathic, the only available treatment is ongoing, temporary pain management, usually with pharmaceuticals. Researchers are still pursuing many paths of study to better understand the process that leads to such widespread neuropathy.

    How Nerve Pain Occurs
There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves that exit the spinal cord through openings between the vertebrae. The point at which the nerve exits the spinal cord is called the nerve root, and where it branches out into many smaller nerves that control different parts of the body is called peripheral nerves. For example, a nerve that exits the lower back has peripheral branches that extend all the way down to the toes. Peripheral nerves comprise the peripheral nervous system.

The peripheral nerves include both motor nerves and sensory nerves:
    0. Sensory nerves are nerves that receive sensory stimuli, such as how something feels and if it is painful. They are made up of nerve fibers, called sensory fibers (mechanoreceptor fibers sense body movement and pressure placed against the body, and nociceptor fibers sense tissue injury).
    0. Motor nerves lead to the muscles and stimulate movement. They are made up of nerve fibers called motor fibers.

    Nerve Injury And Neuropathy Pain
While is has not been firmly established, it is thought that injury to any of the above types of nerve tissue can be a possible cause neuropathy pain.

The part of the nerve cell that is damaged by a neuropathy is the axon (the inner information pathway of the nerve cell) and/or its myelin covering (the fatty outer sheath that protects the nerve cell and assists in conveying information throughout the nervous system).
When neuropathy pain occurs by damage to the above structures, neuropathy is sustained by abnormal processing of sensory input by the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system.
