How is it that someone who drinks ALOT of alcohol becomes borderline diabetic ? Is it because the alcohol is metabolized in the body as sugar ?

I think so. Most alcohol is made up of sugar, something I didn;t know until I watched a tv show, to be honest. It is also why people who are diabetic aren't supposed to drink in access. I could be wrong, but I think that's what it is.

I believe that alcohol pretty much goes straight into the bloodstream as sugar. I think that diabetics aren't supposed to drink any alcohol.

But I can't say that I'm aware of the connection between being an alcoholic and having diabetes.

This is really bothering me. I would like for anyone that knows to please post what they know. Someone that I love had some blood work come back and that is what it said. His glucose said 100 and beside the result it said borderline diabetic. He drinks no less than a six pack everyday :0(

Yes it's true! Alcohol is metabolized as sugar and beer is the worst. There are diabetics on both sides of my family and none of them can drink at all. One of my clients got diagnosed a few monts ago and stopped drinking. The next time he went to the dr. they said they couldn't believe it because it was like he was cured. ( I do think he drank more than a 6 pack every night though.)

I can answer this one exactly as I am borderline diabetic and don't drink at all. A borderline diabetic is someone who's fasting glucose level is between 100-126 over that you are diabetic. I only found this out because I met with a diatician because I could not get any weight off. Have your friend cut down on the carbohydrates try to have him eat no more than 125mg a day or 9 servings a day each serving of carbs equals 15grams everyone's pancreas processess sugar differantely. He can definetely control this with his diet I would really recommend that he make an appt with a diatician. They don't put you on any strict diet. They just go through how it all works you tell them what you like to eat they tell you if you don't want to be a full blown diabetic how much to eat of it I have not changed anything except eating fewer carbs it is amazing how many you consume once you start reading the labels. I hope this helps. Any questions feel free to give me a shout.
    hugs,
    Lisa
