I don't know a whole lot but I didnt think it caused bees any harm for us to use their honey. -

i think its more the fact that they arnt able to live their natural lives. from what i remember at school they put them in some sort of box??? yeah like i said i dont know very much but im pretty sure its not about causing them pain its about taking away their ability to live in the wild by using them as "honey machines" -

I think when you get to animals as small as bees it gets to be a minefield. What about the other small animals displaced or killed in the production and processing of vegetables and other foods vegans feel Ok about eating? It is so hard to know where to draw the line unless you operate your own farm and produce your own food totally organically.
Even then you may have need of medicines which have been tested on animals - I am a type 1 diabetic and I know many animals were killed while discovering insulin. This means I have difficulty in deciding my feelings on these matters. What about you guys? Are you OK with taking medications which involved animal deaths in their discovery? Have you ever had antibiotics or penicillin or even aspirin? Would you refuse them if you needed them? What about insulin which is the substance keeping me alive? To me if you have a moral stance on this about animal suffering it shouldnt matter if the animals died a hundred years ago to discover insulin or yesterday to make a burger. It is all animal suffering and none of it was done by you personally, so what is your opinion on drugs and medicines? -

I agree Lizzie.....It looks like the deeper you get into it animals were harmed, killed or used in some form to produce many things and where to you draw the line? It's a very sensitive subject. I'm not a Vegan.....but my opinion is to each his/her own. I've seen some of the awful films and video's about what animals go through and I'm not comfortable getting my meat from just anywhere. I'm good friends with an awesome rancher who I get all my meat from and trust me those cow's have a better life than I do. It's a choice that makes me more comfortable and I feel like I'm not contributing to those inhumane slaughter houses and ranches.
As for the medicinal side of things it's a tough call and moral gut check....where do you draw the line. I love animals and have nothing but respect for Vegan's and Vegetarians, the world is full of suffering be it by animals or humans. -

I agree once you get into it theres always more and more and more things that you would have to stop eating or using if you were trying to be perfect. But the fact is you can never be perfect and it's not healthy to try to be. It comes down to whats really important to you as an individual.. personally I dont like honey so it's easy for me not to use it but of course if I needed medication I would do that. I don't think it's double standards I think it's about doing as much as you can or are prepared to. Lizzie buying her meat from a free range farm is an awesome thing.. of course she could stop eating meating all together or even stop eating dairy and eggs and honey and using animal products but thats not for her and obviously doesnt fit into her lifestyle and thats how I see my diet... I do the best I can in accordance with my values and my lifestyle and if Im not being perfect then im not going to stress because nobody is :)
