Your LD and Driving

Posted on 07/08/08, 09:50 pm
I didn't drive until I was a senior in high school. I learned late I know. But because of my LD I spent 3 years driving with my parents before they would let me go at it alone. Kinda of glad they did. But my question is, I've been told that there are a lot of ppl out there that are worse off than me and that can't drive. I was wondering if your LD prevented you from driving out there too. o_o

I can't drive but I don't want to. I live in a city where the public transport is pretty good. I just can't be bothered with the expense of having a car, finding somewhere to keep it overnight where it won't get vandalised or stolen, finding somewhere to park when you get where you are going, road taxes, MOT, insurance, parking charges, and all the other costs and hassles. Plus walking and public transport is better for the environment.

I have been driving since I was a 17. Before that I drove a lot on private country roads where we lived which gave me a good experience.
I think because of my LD, I was more determined and willing to learn how to drive, because I was not going to let LD get in my way.

I have been driving since I was 22. I went to driving school which help a lot. I did not think I would ever drive because when I was 4 year old I ran over a main road and I miss a car by a far seconds. The memory of it nearly went away. I was always afraid of cars and roads after that. But I am not like that anymore. I grew out of it. I been driving for a long time now.

I'm afraid I haven't got very far yet with the whole driving thing! Had a few lessons with my dad last summer but before that I was at boarding sch for two years so was a bit hard to do anything about it then. The last experience I had of driving a car wasn't that good so I'm not like leaping to get in again!!!!

The last time I drove I managed to drive over the line of a junction to another road and there were all these cars coming along that beeped at me and I got a bit panicky and struggled reversing! Was incredibly stressfull. And they were all waiting for me beeping away. Wasn't great! There's no rush for me to learn to drive a car anyway coz I won't need one for the next 3 years. I might have another go after I've finished college.

Maybe that is a good idea to wait until you finish college, you still got lots of time to learn, and you will get there take your time with it.

Music you can do it. ^_^ It just takes practice and patience. I have faith in you!

    Terrific Dezna!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is hard to pay attention. I keep the music low. When there's nothing on the radio I keep my Mp3 player with me and have it playing in my lap. I keep my cell phone with me, and try to remember not to answer it while I'm driving.

thanks rini!!! I will get there and prove to you all I can do it! Just maybe not for a while :) I'll keep you all posted on what's going on tho- will deffo need to drive a car eventually!

Good tip to keep your music quiet. I think its really funny when people drive along singing away with their music full blast- how can they consentrate?!!! My brain would explode!

That is a good idea Rini020. Yes it is funny when you see people driving their cars singing away musicblonde. I was listening to the radio oneday and they said that you must watch people in their cars what they get up to. Well the other day I saw someone drinking coffee as he was driving and a man shaving when he was driving as well, Then a lady putting on lipstick. I wonder how they can concentrate with driving.

    I must confess here...
I eat, put on make up, talk on the phone, and listen to music while driving. So I do want to thank you for opening my eyes to the dangers those things cause. I'll have to put much more effort into not doing those things, but to only concentrate on driving.

Welcome
