Blanket love?!

Posted on 07/07/08, 10:29 pm
Noah LOVES blankets. I wish I felt comfortable letting him sleep with a blanket but I just don't, especially since he loves covering his head with blankets!!! But this is my question... when do you think it is safe to let your baby sleep with a blanket? (If you are one of those people who believe that babies shouldn't have anything in their crib) My sister has always let her daughter sleep with blankets so she doesn't understand why I don't. I was just wondering what M.A.I.L's thoughts were??

Jackson has slept with a blanket since day 1. I don't have any problem with it and have even tlaked to the Dr. about it and they told me the safer ways to use a blanket. Jackson ADORES his blanket and already has a fave which we call his "lovey" :)

Both my girls have slept with blankets since day 1 also. Because they were preemies, they couldn't regulate their temps on their own very well. Most of the time now they throw them off, but it is like 300 degrees here!

Bailey didn't use a regular blanket in beginning, he used a swaddle blanket. Now that is 4 months old he does use a regular blanket in the crib. That is the only thing in the crib with him though.

I don't put anything in his crib, too worried about SIDS. Diem I have that same question, when do you think it is safe to let your baby sleep with a blanket? I'm glad you brought it up.

    Hi HeathD,
I personally have think that when he is closer to a year I will feel more comfortable. I did try letting him have one the other day, the first time he just rolled to the other side of the crib and then it didn't matter anyway. The second night he balled it up (kinda) and then put his face in it. (He likes to sleep curled up but face towards the mattress. So that was the last of that. I have decided that he does okay without it thus far and it's summer so once the winter months come around I'll probably give him a blanket then. (He'll be almost a year then)

Thanks Diem. I used to wrap a blanket at the end of his bassinet, tucked it in, so it was safe. Now he rootches around too much, which is why no blankie so far. I like your idea though. I may ask the pediatrician too. He wears a sleeper with feet every night or a sleeper without feet with socks to keep warm.

In the winter months my son use to wear a sleep sack, I LOVED those.

I used those sleepsacks too, they are great. He usually kicks the diaper off now when he wears them. He rootches around too much. He is a little bugger!

I allow Lucas to have a blanket because he loves them. I started allowing him to fall asleep with one about the age of 5 months. He snuggles his blanket, I just check him after he falls asleep to make sure it is not by his face. It is a very thin blanket, but if it is not someting you are comfortable with, just dont do it.

I haven't put Peyton to sleep with a blanket yet. She uses one when she is nursing and I am hoping it will become a transitional item soon. I saw some little "blankies" at the Carter's outlet the other day. They were small squares of the really soft blanket material to use as a lovie. I am thinking I am going to go back and get some. I think I would be more comfortable with her having a small item in bed with her instead of a bigger blankie.

Welcome
