Dahlias...

I know dahlia tubers have to be lifted to go inside for the winter months: I can't see bringing in the whole plant, so can we cut it apart from the rhizome? I know we can't cut down a bulbous plant as it cuts off the sugar supply to the bulb and can stop the plant from blooming, but is it ok to do this with a dahlia tuber? This is why I have never started growing tubers before, I hope this works out!
