Finicky Lavender

Posted on 07/26/08, 10:17 am
I finally got an english lavender plant and put it in a sunny location on my deck rail shelf. It is dying! I have cut half of it off as it is getting dry and looks dead. I have tried moving it, being more attentive of watering, fertilizing yet it continues to die off. Has anyone her ever expereienced this?

Evidently it likes LOTS of water. I have one that appears to be doing well (planted 6 weeks ago) on the north side of the house near a window AC's condensation drip.

Lavender perfers free draining soil, rather sandy, It hates rich soil and will die in manure or to much organic material. I have a french lavender hedge on either side of my rock wall going up to my front door. I only prune it lightly after it flowers , and never prune the woody stems as it never grows back . Mine has been up for 3 years and I've managed to keep it at about 3 feet hieght. Lavender only looks good for about 3or 4 years so I will take cuttings this year to replant when the hedge starts to look sad. hope this helps,

i agree, my lavendar always does better in poor, well drained soil. mine is french as well. i had it in an herb pot and i never fertilize my herbs..if it do, its only for the basil. (herbs taste better with less fertilizer) i never trim it unless i cut only the flowers for drying. it has been moved to a new house, my sisters..haha..and it is still flourishing!! huge and doubled in size. she has it on the south side, not much water.,same as me.

Lavendar likes alkaline soil, try sprinkling crumbled cooked eggshells around it.
