Indoor miniature roses

Posted on 06/18/08, 08:36 am
When I was a child, I dreamt of being grown up and said I would grow indoor miniature roses in my kitchen...finally got them for mother's day this year, in fact three plants....guess what! They are all almost dead and I have no idea of why! I followed directions to a "T"..is this a twist of fate or what? Now I put them outside and they are only 'existing' there, too!! Anyone out there have any experience with them?

Oh, yeah! They are EXTREMELY difficult to grow indoors; VERY susceptible to spider mites. Thye need full sun, a humidity tray, and a LOT of luck!

What is a humidity tray? Maybe I'll spritz them with my household plant insecticide as well!

I use a large tray filled with aquarium gravel. Put water in the tray, but don't let it touch the bottom of the pot. The water will evaporate, keeping the plant in the proper humidity. It also helps with African Violets and Gardenias.

I've never had much luck with indoor miniature roses, although some have grown beautifully outside. (I used to care for fifty rose bushes at my mom's house until I moved too far away to keep it up). Lots of sun (I think they like about six hours a day). And lots of air movement.

Yeah, I eventually gave up on indoor roses myself; they do great in pots outside, but move them indoors, and they just start downhill.

I never saw a plant bomb like this one...I put them outside and am still cutting off dead areas..there isn't much left to go wrong!

Try feeding them with rose food. They like larger roses need to be fed to bloom and thrive. Keep soil moist. If after two weeks they seem to be back to life? I would carefully re-pot them in a size a little larger than they were in. Its possible they are root bound. I love them and have killed plenty. The last ones I bought I just planted in my garden. One lived and is doing well.

Have always had to put mine outdoors also. Mine get so huge I have to trellis them.
