Lurkers???

Now....please tell me what that word puts you in mind of??? Am I the only one that finds that word offensive???
When I think of that word, I tend to put it in the category with peeping toms and stalkers.
How many times do we all read posts but have nothing to add or just don't have time to respond? So we are labeled "lurkers"??? If I were a newbie and read a post....even a generally good post....labeling me as a lurker because I was just checking things out and not posting, I would be gone. Feeling like I wasn't wanted.
That is a word, I hope we don't ever hear in this group. I encourage you all to read all the posts but please don't feel obligated to respond. The information posted here is for your information and how you respond is entirely up to you. You will never be labeled in this room!!!
Cooling down now....gentle hugs....

The word was used in a post today. The person that posted it was not meaning it in bad way and the post was not a bad post. But they seemed to take offense at me voicing my opinion on the use of the word and still doesn't understand why it bothers me even after me trying to explain it to her.
Let me ask you....what is your thought about the word "lurker"?? -

I didn't see the post that you are referring to, however I agree that when someone refers to lurkers I think of several negative things, eg; Merve the perv, a stalker, or even someone that cruises the board to send junk mail to people. I know there are alot of times I either don't have a response, or someone already basically said what I would so why repeat the same thing? So I am guessing some people may consider that lurking, but if I was a newbie and someone said there are a bunch of lurkers here I would be a bit hesitant to post any questions out of concern that I might be harassed by one of the lurkers. -

Basket I responded to that other post and I agree with you. If I was one of the "shy" or "quiet" ones who don't post much, or at all, I wouldn't want to be referred to that way. It gives the impression that they are doing something wrong, when there is absolutely nothing wrong with just coming to read and get information.
A lot of people start out that way, especially if they have never belonged to a support group or any kind of website discussion group before. I'd hate to think that someone came to DS, and felt unwelcome, because someone hung a negative-sounding title on them.
The really sad thing is that we probably will never know if that's happened, or who they were, because they are sitting in the background not posting. They will just leave, and we will miss knowing them, all because of a thoughtless word.
