Simple and easy Halloween costumes.....

Trying to dress up a kid for Halloween can be a challenge. I remember one year, we were so broke and I wasn't sure what I was gonna do. So being from TX and my father being one of the last proverbial cowboys I got the idea to dress him up like a rodeo cowboy.

He was a little guy at the time so we took a pair of his dad's cut off jeans, put a red bandana in the back pocket hanging out and an old flannel shirt with the sleeves cut off. A pair of my old cowboy boots....complete with curled up toes...and stuffed them with socks until they would stay on his feet. We painted his face up, painted his hair green with that jello solution and took one of my dad's old beat up working cowboy hats.

He actually won first place in the costume parade that year.

Any more ideas for those that have kids???

Excuse me.....a rodeo clown...not cowboy. Good old fibro fog is getting thicker by the moment today.

My kids are grown now, but one year when we were really broke, back in the first wave of "Transformers," I took a cardboard box and cut armholes and a hole to stick my son's head through (he was about 3 or 4). I took marking pens and drew a "robot" design on the box, and had him wear a black shirt and black tights, and I thought he looked really cute. His dad (now my ex) was out of town, and when he got back he was horrified when he saw what I had done - his son had been taken out in public in a CARDBOARD box! OMG!

Ummm...I DID say he was my EX - right? LOL

The best costume I ever wore was a really cheap and easy to do witch!
A pair of old, black tights - ripped and laddered is best! A black bin bag with holes cut out for arms and head.
A paper/card hat (a simple cone with circle for the brim - which the kids can decorate themselves in the weeks leading up to Halloween) all finished off with Mum's broom/mop in my case!

Second hand stores are always good places for costume ideas too. Bear and I used to go to mascerade parties. One year we went as Beauty and the Beast.....a green lame gown for myself and tattered jeans with an old fringed leather vest that was too small and we cut then laced back together. And Bear stopped by the butcher shop and bigged up and raw leg bone. Another year we went as Aqualung and Cross Eyed Mary (2 characters from songs from the Aqualung album by Jethro Tull) and everything came from the Good Will. I don't think I ever spent over $20 for any year.

One of my friends kids is going as a bag of grapes this year; they are taking a clear trash bag cutting leg & arm holes (the top opening is going to be where the head sticks out)and they are just going to blow up a bunch of purple ballons to fill the trash bag up, it sounded cute. Last year her son was a table setting. they took a box and cut a hole just big enough for his head to go through they then covered the box with a cheap tablecloth cut long enough to cover box and then they glued different plastic ware for the table setting itself along with other fake things, they had it so his head was on a plate it actually came out cute and didn't cost much.

    Here are some others I found on a website (not just for kids)also another website that you will have to copy and paste that has some great ideas that include ideas that include chairbound;

    1. Gumball Machine - Take 1 bag multicolored balloons, 1 clear trash bag, and a baseball cap. Blow up the balloons. Be sure to cut two holes in the bottom of the bag for your legs and two on the sides for your arms - not big enough for the balloons to escape from. Step into the bag and secure it at the neck with ribbon or twin or pin it to your shirt underneath. Add the balloons. Now get a piece of paper or cardboard and write 5 cents or other monetary amount of your choice and stick the paper onto the hat. Viola. Gumball machine.

    2. Zombie - Easy as pie. Find old clothes you're going to throw out anyhow. Shred them. Add bits of red, green, and brown paint for 'realistic' color. Dark makeup under the eyes, bits of red lipstick or makeup for blood... done. Work on your groaning 'Braaaaains' and you're set.

    3. Ghost - Mom did it when you were a kid. Why break tradition. Take one Bed sheet. Cut Eye holes. Done! Add silly shoes or use interesting floral patterns on your sheets for giggle value. It worked in Beatlejuice!

    4. Toga! - Again with the sheets. Drape in creative ways, add sandals. Quick, easy, and classic.

    5. Larger than life body parts! - Big butts and guts can be silly and fun. Buy a larger than usual pair of sweatpants and stuff the front or back with pillows/newspaper, plastic bags - whatever you have lying around to give it shape. It will exaggerate the size and shape of whatever.

    6. Painter - Find painters overalls at your local hardware store. Buy cheap and easy to find kids paints anywhere. Decorate yourself, add paintbrushes to a pocket... done. Quick and easy.

    7. Military - Any army/navy surplus store will have plenty of neat accessories for any kind of military costume.
    8. Nerd/Old Person - Take one plaid shirt, a pair of khaki pants pulled up high . Now for nerd add toy glasses and a pocket calculator and pens. For an old man, you just wear high socks with old loafers.

    9. Poor Man's Playboy - One bathrobe, one fake pipe, and one pair of slippers makes one a cheap version of Hue Heffner. Add a stuffed bunny rabbit for comedy value and you're set.

    10. Bathing Beauty - Take any bathing suit, add a sash with 'First Prize' or 'Miss (Insert Punny Title here - Understood, Taken, Ing Persons) and high-heels. Tiara is optional. Works for men too if they're daring.
