This is a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing. I wish more Americans(I hate that term since all of North and South America are Americans not just the USA} would take the time to listen to Native American stories since they are so beautiful and meaningful. My heritage is 1/2 Swedish and 1/2 Norwegian but I belong to a Unitarian church that believes that everyone has their own spirituality and journey to take.

Why the trees shed their leaves - a Lakota story
Posted on 08/18/08, 05:24 pm
Long, Long ago, there lived a young man and a young lady in a village. There was a mutual attraction and the two often found excuses to meet each other. the young man had a strong desire to learn the flute but there was no one in the village who could help teach him. there was an uncle in another village, two sleeps away, who did have the talent and it was decided the young man should travel to him and seek his help. before leaving, he met with the young lady and her family. they decided they would be joined just as soon as he returned from visiting his uncle. so off he went and was gone for many sleeps. he learned the flute well and became a skillful player. upon his return to his village, he ran to the girl's brother and asked where she was. he assumed she was just out working in the fields tending the crops as was the common practice for young women. her brother explained no, she was not tending crops. the death sickness had touched the village and took several lives. she was one who crossed over. he asked the brother to take him to her place of final rest. once there, the young man sat down next to her place, he took out his flute and began to play a mournful melody. he played and played, each melody was sadder then the last one. his music was so sad and touching, the trees throughout the area began to cry, for they felt his sadness. now trees cry by shedding their leaves as tears. he played and played and the trees cried and cried until most of the leaves - tears covered the ground. to this very day, every autumn, the trees remember the deep sorrow felt by the young man for his lady and begin to cry by shedding leaves until their branches are bare.

Wonderful story!!! It almost makes your heat weep reading this!! I so love your words of wisdom. One day sister you and I should meet and have some coffee and let the spirits guide us!!! Your such an amazing person and anyone you touch shall be blessed with knowledge and love that very few have known. You so make me think of my speech therapist when Iwas 5 that I told you about who was the chiefs daughter from the local reservation in Cheyenne!!! -

I only share what has been shared with me and the words are not always my words. Most of what I share are things that the spirits have brought across my path that day or in the days past. Some how I seem to post what at least one person needed to hear that day. So, in my opinion the credit goes to the powers that guide me.
