any hikers here?

i've been walking 3-4 miles daily on city streets & sidewalks; wondering how to transition into / train for those nice juicy 16-mile hikes thru the beautiful shady woods.
a friend was training for a mini and found a schedule that advocated daily cross-training in 30-60 minute sessions, with one big walk each saturday, each one longer than the previous. i could work with that model. being a SAHM i could surely drag the kids along with me for longer walks more often than if i had an office job, but my youngest is 7 and may not be able to handle much more than 3-4 miles? i don't know what to expect from a kid. (well, except for the 11yo boy -- i know i can expect him to whine about it LOL)
any suggestions?
